Make sure to follow copyright laws. If it’s copyrighted, you can’t post a pattern.

i searched it up and i found that if i make it clear that it’s fan art and that it’s unofficial and that it’s free then it’s generally accepted, especially if they’re just starting out. which the creators of tadc are. i’ve also included in the bio that the character belongs to them and that it cannot be used for commercial use, only for personal

no, i’m pretty sure that does not change anything. whether it is fanart or not, free or not, or for personal use it is still infringement. you’re still going against copyright policies. if stranger things or tadc were to make a crochet pattern, it’d be fine. or if you got their permission. but no matter if tadc is just starting out — it still has a very big fanbase — that’s taking advantage of their newness.

To clear up confusions here - fan art is illegal to sell unless you get permission, it’s in the public domain, or it’s considered fair use which is pretty much limited to written works. You are not free from risk just because you name them in the pattern or because you say it’s for personal use only. That will mean nothing if they decide to come down on you. But you’re well within your right to take that risk. Just hope you never get caught cause it could be something as simple as a cease and desist, or as bad as them suing you for everything you and your parents are worth (since you’re a minor). If you want to read more, here’s a resource that goes into all of it, what is a trademark, what is copyright, etc.
