Anyone else seeing an uptick in scammers?

I’ve been seeing a considerable increase in scammers on social medias. Not sure if it’s because summer is here or what. From 1-2 a month to 1-2 a week!

I’ve found a very quick way to be rid of them if you have an ebay or Amazon acc. Once you know what they want quickly make a private listing for the item(s) they want and send it to them. Ebay and amazon take whatever payment their ‘preferred’ payment method uses, they don’t require an account to purchase and they usually give the best deal on shipping so it’s hard for them to argue against this method.

They all give the same story, first they try to push their address on you like some kind of good will offering to do it whatever way they want you to, then they claim they don’t understand, then they disappear.

I had one claim to be "old school’ and only know cash app… How is cash app old school when ebay’s been around since like 97? Anyway hope this might help someone.

In Canada we don’t even have cashapp or venmo and the likes. We have Paypal, we have Stripe, and good old etransfer. For the purpose of protecting customers. For small businesses those apps are great, amazing and very important even. But they are also a mine of gold for scammers

I know the scammers are going heavy because all my FB crochet groups post all the funny DMs of people trying to scam them. I’ve also just noticed some of my groups are just heavy with spam here lately, poor mods!

I don’t sell online, so I don’t have anyone coming at me. After seeing the people in my groups complain about being ripped off and reverse funded and such I am kind of too scared to sell online. I have done one local show and I was so stressed I can’t even imagine doing it online and being duped by scammers!

That’s why I use ebay specifically, they have policies in place to protect from that stuff. As long as you take good photos they’ll help you. I’ve rarely had issue when selling on ebay. Amazon on the other hand I’ve had huge problems with but it seems to be a big enough name to scare off most scammers.

Are you selling finished items on Amazon or patterns? Just curious

Yep especially on instagram. Ive had a few message me about a custom but they can offer some sort of cheque.
To get around this i require a 50% down.
We dont have venmo or cash app in canada.
So i only use paypal, square, etransfer thats it

I have a Teddooo account so I tell them I do all my business through that app and if they don’t like it they can buy from someone else. Then I call them out on being scammers.

Yeah I been seeing scammers left and right and I’m fed up. Stick to PayPal, cash, or your bank whenever possible. Personally I hate Venmo and cash app and stuff like that

Finished items, I only sell patterns here right now. If they don’t specify Amazon I default to ebay though. I haven’t had someone request Amazon in like 3 years. :open_mouth:. If they’re on the up and up they’re usually happy with either, scammers will be happy with neither.

@PleiadesCrochet Its comforting to know I’m not alone bit concerning to see the increase  wonder what their goal is, could it really just be a handmade item? Doesn’t seem worth the scam handmade things are expensive but don’t generally carry the sparkle of something name brand that’s expensive. So I don’t usually experience this many scammers.

@CosmikEluminatedC on custom items, absolutely. But they’ve been after my premade things lately.

@Happyflower2 lol yeah that does seem to piss them off and they try to talk you into a strange app. The only odd one I use is stripe -for here.

Do you like tedoo?

It’s not the greatest, and I honestly havent Listed the entirety of my stock. It’s definitely not the worst either. It just takes me awhile to figure out new things so I haven’t quite figured out all the cool features yet. It’s nice to have a place to send people though. I’ll have to remember the eBay thing.

I have a square site, it’s how I ran my last business so I was already familiar. Once you get it set up, it’s super simple to use and it’s supposed to be able to integrate with other sites

I’ve seen mixed answers on those promo pages. At 1k followers and other plateaus I’ve seen it said they’re worth it because they break you into a new audience. But ignore the ones that post to pester you cause they’re usually just starting out and begging for content. There’s ones that are already big and those are supposed to be worth it.

I’ve never used it, when I did other businesses I always used PayPal and the little card swiper they’ll send you for you phone.

Ebay just does no fees if you direct link them a listing like Etsy does. (I think Etsy still does that anyway.)

I’ve seen so many teedoo ads it started to seem like a scam
