Hello
I want to make a beani with DK yarn and I’m wondering how many chains to start with. What do you guys recommend?
Chain the circumference of your head is the most basic answer. You want to err on tighter than looser.
Although in my opinion you’d be better off following a pattern.
This one is free and uses DK yarn.
You can search for beanie, then search by crochet and yarn type .
Personally, I would recommend starting at the crown and working down for a beanie with a magic circle. There are many ways to make a beanie. Most slouchy MR beanies I’ve seen have 8-12 extra rounds for slouch.
You could also crochet a “ribbed” panel and sew the top together. I think this is the most popular way and I have yet to try it.
Another way is to either chain the circumference of your dome piece or crochet the actual ribbing to measure it instead of just the chain.
Foundation chains with FPDC and BPDC worked off of them are also nice alternatives to just a simple chain to work off of in the beginning.
You need to do a swatch, then some math
So, first chain around 40 and work in the round using whatever stitch pattern you plan to use for 15-20 rounds. Lay flat and measure 4" (10cm) and count how many sts and rounds are in the 4"(10cm) divide that by 4(10) to get your sts per inch (cm). Then you’ll want to use 1-2 inch (3-5cm) smaller than your head circumference (crochet stretches). Take the length you need multiplied by the sts per inch (cm) to get your starting chain
(You can use the rounds gauge to help determine how many rounds you need)
i do not know how many chains but i like to do an HDC on the stitches, i do two colors and i do 27 RNDS with one color and 27 RNDS with the other.
