So I went ahead and made two. They are so cool. And super easy to make. Work up in no time! No issues with the pattern. And the explanation with color change made it really easy to understand.
Blue worsted 4-4.5mm. Id start 4.5mm and go down if the gaps are too large.

Id use brown for the eye and worsted weight yarn with a 2.5mm hook
technically this is over but i’m not strict at all so yea u can test!

I will use a colorful cotton yarn I have that was mostly greens in it, I’ll start with 3,5 mm and see if it works good with the yarn
