Happy Thursday!
Today, I have a fun but very serious question for all the amazing makers here. Do you believe that buying yarn and actually crocheting are two completely separate hobbies? Because I’m starting to think they are!
There is nothing more exciting than seeing a beautiful skein of yarn, adding it to the cart, and bringing it home to our “stash”—even when we already have boxes of yarn waiting for us! It’s like a happy therapy for our souls, but a mini-trauma for our bank accounts. ![]()
So, open confession: How big is your yarn stash right now? Are you a “buy-only-when-I-need-it” crafter, or is your house slowly turning into a beautiful yarn store? Let’s chat and share our yarn secrets below! ![]()

I’ll go first! I try so hard to be disciplined, but whenever I see a gorgeous color gradient or soft plush yarn, my hands just automatically add it to the cart! What is your biggest weakness when it comes to buying yarn? ![]()

They are two different hobbies
that’s at least what I tell my husband ![]()
I will buy yarn just to spend my mom’s money. I have like, five skeins of unused yarn that’s like, a year old. I crochet with size 6 and dk yarn. any smaller or larger is a no. for me it has to be cotton, plush, or acrylic. LOL
Those are two different hobbies. I buy these gorgeous skeins but then proceed to not use them… my yarn stash is slowly taking over my room ![]()
yes!!!
Someday I will put all the yarn I own in one big pile and take a picture of Yarn Everest
I definitely have spent more time and money on buying yarn, patterns, tools etc than I have on actually crocheting or knitting with it
I have a yarn store in spare bedroom. Currently working on not buying anymore and using my stash. I have more yarn than I probably will use in my life time. Lol
I think they definitely could be two separate hobbies. Buying yarn can be different for different people.
For me personally they’re not.
I only buy yarn when I already have a project in mind that I need it for. I tend to buy almost all of my yarn online , so I never get to see it up close or touch it first. Although that means I do rely heavily on reviews.
ATM, I just have the yarn I am using now for the current sweater I am crocheting. And whatever odds and ends are leftovers from former projects.
In 2 weeks I’ll be getting more for the next couple of sweaters I’ll make.
I do love yarn of course, but for me a beautiful yarn is just a part of the process of crocheting something beautiful.
.
I’m a pretty frugal person, I don’t really like spending too much money. So I typically only buy yarn when I need it, like if I’m missing a specific colour or I need a yarn type that I don’t have like more cotton or fluffy yarn for a specific project. I’m also not much of a wip hoarder. I like to get things done. I think those two things combined help me keep my yarn-buying in check lol. That being said, my yarn stash is still significant, mainly chenille yarn (in bulky and ski chenille), some acrylic, and a few small skeins of mercerized cotton. One fluffy yarn that I still don’t know what to use for (because, try as I might, when I go out to buy yarn that I need, sometimes I see other yarns that I have ideas for and allow myself to grab just one or two skeins lol)
I like to buy sets of yarn so I don’t have to worry about the constant need to buy more yarn often. Which is why I have much chenille and acrylic leftover still. I will very rarely need to add to that stash unless an important colour runs out or I don’t have something that my next project relies on
Hm, for some I’d definitely say they’re separate hobbies!
Though for me they definitely go together, since I usually only buy when I need it. Not just when I see some pretty yarn, though it is tempting! I usually look at the price and decide “Nope!” ![]()
Well for me guess I’m borderline. I have 5 Tidy cat pails (makes for good water & dirt proof storage) full of size 3, 12 skeins of size 4 acrylic, and 3 skeins of plush. Since I buy yarn online due to limited transportation, I buy in bulk planning up to 10 projects in advance, then I’ll go 2-3 months without getting any.![]()

Haha using that excuse on the husband is a classic move!

Haha spending mom’s money on yarn sounds like a win-win situation! ![]()
Size 6 and DK yarn are so comfortable to work with, but hold on—only 5 unused skeins? That means your self-control is actually a superpower compared to the rest of us! Thanks for sharing! ![]()

Haha welcome to the ‘Yarn is taking over my room’ club! ![]()
There is just something so magical about buying them. At this point, we should just call it interior decor! Thanks for sharing! ![]()

Right?! Glad we are all on the same page about this! Absolute facts! ![]()
..
Haha ‘Yarn Everest’ sounds like an epic picture! ![]()
Please tag me if you ever do that, I would love to see it! It feels so comforting to know we are all spending more time window shopping for yarn than actual crafting. You are definitely not alone! ![]()

Oh wow, a whole yarn store in a spare bedroom? That is the ultimate dream!
Standard rules apply: we have enough yarn to last a lifetime, but we still search for more! Good luck with using your stash, you can do it! ![]()
Your discipline is honestly so admirable, Bardia!
Buying only for active projects keeps things so organized. Since you buy online, relying on reviews is definitely key—though we all know online yarn can sometimes bring unexpected surprises or mini traumas!
Glad your next batch for the new sweaters is coming in 2 weeks. Happy stitching! ![]()

Being a finisher and not hoarding WIPs is a true superpower!
Living that disciplined craft life is so hard, but it’s great that you still allow yourself a little treat of ‘one or two extra skeins’ when inspiration strikes—we all need that!
Chenille and mercerized cotton are such amazing textures to have in a stash. Thank you so much for sharing your wise yarn habits with us! ![]()
