Crediting the designer

So when I am selling a pattern at a market, how do I credit the designer? Do y’all have any suggestions on how I could give them credit?

Business cards with the name of pattern and designer?

So you want to sell a pattern that someone else designed at a market? (EDITED TO ADD it is unclear exactly what you mean, selling the pattern or selling your make made from someone else’s pattern) I would personally ask them for their permission first because their pattern is their property

If you are selling something you made from their pattern then the business card with the pattern name and designer name on it is good enough (in the US, laws may differ elsewhere)

Some patterns have something that already says in it something like, “you may sell finished product as long as you credit me as the designer” i think that is what they are talking about :woman_shrugging:

The pattern itself is protected by copyright law. You have to ask the copyright holder permission to sell the pattern itself

The finished project may be used as the maker sees fit. The designer (in the US at least) has no say in what happens to the maker’s project.

They may ask you to give them credit but it’s not legally required. It’s polite, yes, but not legally required by law to give them credit (again in the US, other countries laws may differ)

Uhhhhh do u mean selling the crocheted item after ur done with the pattern or selling the pattern ??? Most pattern designers don’t allow that because it’s like ur stealing all there hard work ! And if u mean by plushie / crocheted item then u should tag them on insta or ribblr ( any online platform ) and u must make it clear that the pattern is not urs

Personally, as a designer, this is how i’d like to be credited;

if posted or using for promotional materials (such as on an instagram, or etsy listing for a final plushie) a mention of just “This pattern is by Alyphira_Crochet” would suffice.

For in person events, I dont mind if people dont have things written out, honestly, if someone asks about the pattern I just expect them to say oh this is the designer, etc, as I know a lot of in person events draw people that would never even come near a pattern.

If you are torn, it could always be courteous to include “design by ____” on a price tag, etc.
