Credits and free patterns

Is it ok if I post a free pattern I found and give credit to the author?

Best practice would be to ask the original creator first. But you could always direct people to pattern by making it yourself and then crediting the designer (without posting the pattern).

Some designers don’t like the reposting of their free patterns and would prefer that potential crafters go to their instagram/shop/website for the pattern.

No, it is never OK to post another designer’s pattern (without explicit consent from designer). You can direct other people to wherever they have their pattern available, but not to post the pattern itself.

But what if they say “ JE N’EFFECTUE PLUS DE SUIVI sur cet ancien modèle. Je le laisse à disposition gratuitement.

I no longer support this model. You can use it for free”.
It’s a free pattern on ravelry and someone else also made a YouTube tutorial for it.

It’s still not yours.

That isn’t giving permission to post the pattern, that is permission to make the pattern for free. If you wish to share it, share the link to the pattern not the pattern itself!

Are you referring to posting the pattern as your own in your shop or just sharing the link to it in a topic?

I’ll probably just post the links then.

No, the original designer posted it in the platform they prefer. They cant monitor what happens with their work if someone else posts it.

Plus most creators specify that you shouldnt repost their stuff, and others assume its self explanatory.

Ive seen several people post patterns with credit to the original designer. Every single one, without fail, has been taken down by ribblr.

The best thing to do, is to ask the creator to post it in ribblr themselves. This shows that there is demand for their pattern on this platform
