Digital Art !!

(wasn’t really sure which space to put this in, sorryyy) mom has been working on writing a childrens book, and wants me to be the illustrator, totally cool with that. issue is I don’t wanna just draw on paper, take a picture and upload it :skull: she suggested like when of those tablets that comes with the digital art app and pen? idrk or would any touch screen device work? (tried using my phone for this purpose last yr, it was way too difficult with such a small surface) anyways, anybody have recommendations of what I should look for? thanks !!

I recommend moving this to Personal spaces :bust_in_silhouette: > Art Creative Corner

From personal experience, using an iPad (get the IPad Air, it’ll work just fine for what you’re doing, and a refurbished one is ideal)

And a cheap stylus (I got mine for $17 on Amazon, make sure yours actually works with your iPad tho)

Apps I recommend (free ofc)

  • Autodesk Sketchbook (I’m not 100% sure if it’s free anymore)
  • Adobe Fresco (add free, an adobe acc is free)
  • IBS paint (I’ve never used it myself)

If you need any help with anything just lmk :)

Me personally procreate is a gooch app for digital art that’s where I do most of mine, so if you can spare some change and if you have an iPad you could do that

If you have an iPad I’d recommend Procreate, it’s what I use for 90% for my digital art (other times I use Adobe Fresco, but I don’t like it as much) but sadly it’s not free. I have a love hate relationship with Fresco, it likes crashing and lacks some really handy tools like blurring (it has a smudge tool but it’s just not the same…). I do use Fresco on a laptop so that might have something to do with it.

Whatever program you choose, I’d recommend looking up some beginners guides/tutorials/tips and tricks, so you can learn more about the program.

Also before you start illustrating for the book, learn about DPI (dots per inch, the amount of quality of your work, the higher the better, but there may be limits for printing) and the difference between RGB, RYB, and CYMK (the primary colour depending on medium)

Sorry for the wall of text, digital art is so fun and worthwhile (to the point of me almost info dumping). Good luck with whatever program you choose and with illustrating the book :pink_heart:

im totally willing to pay for the app, but we don’t really have like 800 dollars to throw out for an iPad, will one of those cheap ones from Walmart work :skull: :hand_with_fingers_splayed:

I don’t know about the ones from Walmart (I’m Australian so I really can’t help) but refurbished devices are usually cheaper. You don’t need the most recent iPad, the one I have is only compatible with the gen 1 Apple Pencil (the battery started playing up so it’s definitely getting old) as long as Procreate is compatible you should be fine.

If I remember correctly Procreate is Apple exclusive so it’s definitely an investment if you don’t already have an iPad. But something similar and a free program could definitely be a good starting point if you’re not 100% sold on digital art.

Hiiii!!

I have been doing digital art for quite a while now, and have been using a drawing pad that connects to your phone or in my case a PC. It depends on what you like but I found it works quite well, just connect it to your device and whatever you draw shows up on the screen as the stylus works as a mouse. I do also recomend Ibis Paint as it is free for an hour a day on PC and laptop, but you are able to buy a package for it to be unlimited however I think it might be free to use as long as you want on phone, I’m not sure.

If you have any questions I would be happy to answer!
