First pattern help

Can someone explain to me how to check if a pattern is correct? I’ve been working on a new pattern and I’m not sure if I’m getting the stitch counts right and I’m worried I’ll have to restart if I find something wrong later in the pattern.

The first decrease seems right and everything adds up but the newer 2 decreases don’t match up with stitch count at the end like the other one did I’m currently making it as I go, would it just be better to do the math and then test it?

11sc, 6inc, 11sc (34)

Sc x5

(4sc 1 dec)x6 (28)

Sc around

(2sc 1 dec)x6 (22) (worked for the round)

(1sc 1 dec)x7 sc (?) (also worked for the round)

Thanks for any help I can get this is my first time making a pattern and wanted to know if there was an equation I could use or something or if I should just trust the test and not the math.

Ok, so let me break this down.
11sc, 6 inc, 11 sc equals 34 sts
4sc, Dec does not go into 34 (34/6 is 5.67)
So that’s the start of the problem

I figured as much, should I consider adding 2 stitches to make it 36 since 34 only breaks down to 17 which is a prime?

Yes.

Yes, its usually best to do the maths before doing the work, especially when testing. Ive been writing an app for years in the background that does it for really simple patterns but its nowhere near ready for the public  maybe one day

You should post a tester call! That way people can make sure that your patterns works.

Ooo you should add an enlargement and shrink option :hushed: but yeah I knew I should probably write it out first but I like to be able to place things exactly how I want them lol

Oh I for sure will when it’s done :D it’s no where near that yet sadly

Enlargement and shrink option is just using diff yarn and hook with the same pattern though. When i write my patterns, i write down what i do as i crochet (in a notebook), and take pictures, then write it up after and check it adds up. Sometimes i make a second one. The testers can then catch any typoes etc

I usually rewrite the patterns to get bigger lol I sit there and do the math. Also that’s what I’m doing! Writing it down along the way is the way to go cause you don’t wanna accidentally make the neck too long or smth
