I think it turned out adorable! What i do is count the stitches and mark them done with a stitch marker, place the pieces in between and see how it would look if i sew it there. If i lile it i go for itā¦ But i agree, i dont like when a pattern isnt specific enough with these things, did it at least tell you the height of the placement?
