Gauge??

I am working on making my first pattern ever and I don’t understand how to figure out gauge or even what it is. I have tried looking it up and it makes no sense to me. Is gauge important to know?

it’s sort of a guide as to how big your project will turn out; ita not really important in amigurumi patterns, but it is in clothing

say, you’re trying to make a sweater that calls for dk (3) yarn but you want to use worsted (4.) its gauge may say that a 4x4 inch swatch with their yarn and hook was 20 stitches x 25 rows wide (i’m totally guessing here lol). so, you’d take your chosen yarn and hook and try to match that 4x4 measurement (which, in your case, may come out to 15 stitches x 20 rows) (again, total shot in the dark, just to make an example)

then from there you can adjust the pattern accordingly (like seeing how many stitches there are per inch and using that to adjust the rest of the pattern)

i hope that makes sense i’m going off of memory lol

Gauge (sometimes called tension) tells you

that a certain number of stitches across a row should be so many inches (cm),

and that a certain number of rows up and down should be so many inches (cm)

And it should tell you what hook size (or knitting needle size) and what yarn they used

Even with amigurumi, using a thicker yarn and bigger needle than called for would make a larger piece
