I don’t mean any disrespect to anyone who has created such patterns… But there are so many different ones for things that are popular, like the leggy frogs, turtles and bees, that it must be near on impossible for a pattern to vary so differently that it isn’t the same as someone else’s?
Again, I mean no harm in my question… I’m just curious because I’ve seen so many! I hope I don’t offend anyone by asking.
I personally don’t know myself. Maybe it’s the size, or different features if they have any?
Well they are all a little different
Rather than modifying an existing pattern, it’s their own because they made it using their own steps, not a modification of someone else’s pattern (that’s just stealing) they got inspiration to make their own version which is how things work, like bees, they saw a pattern and wanted to make there own that looks like that and the person who made a bee pattern was inspired by real life bees etc inspiration starts at the beginning and just goes from there! Sure steps could be the same but that’s because in general most shapes in crochet especially amigurumi are the same like spheres for example
Also no worries! It’s definitely something to be curious about when so much exist, no shame in asking/curiosity
To make a long story short, if they made a pattern with their own steps and knowledge of crochet it’s theirs
Make a different style like cartoon for example, or a different shape. AmiMommyBoutique makes amazing patterns that are all cubes but you can find different ideas.
@LunaLemontree , I’ve been wanting to ask a similar question for a while now, but I too did not want anyone to be offended. I agree that there are a plethora of what seems to be “the same” or extreemly similar patterns. In any case, the nice thing about the duplications is showing designers what seems to be trending. The not so good thing, for sellers at least, is posting a pattern for sale, then finding several posted after for free.
Where I used to sell my designs (not sure if Im allowed to say the name) I always did a search using as many “tags/words” I could think of to describe my project. If the results produced several others very similar to out to my new design I would not list mine, as a courtesy to fellow designers.
I am so grateful to find others interested in needlecrafting that I never want to tarnish that relationnship by being accused of copying, plagiarism or worse … theft. Getting an idea by looking at others work, then trying to reproduce it to look/function the same FOR your own personal use is fine; however, writing it down and selling or especially giving away a a lower price to zero is NOT GOOD. I know copyright laws cover not only the written word, but the ideas behind them.
Always be MINDFUL of the people you associate with and try to ask yourself how you would feel. You can always ask the original designer if s/he has plans to develop the pattern further and go from there. Example: I bought a set of crochet bookmark patterns that included 10 different animals. Of course, there are more than 10 animals in the world; so, I mindfully contacted the desugner and asked him if he planned to develop his pattern further and incorporate other animals/ characters. He said no, he was on to other things and it was ok if I made more designs. He just asked that I include a line in my pattern(s) "inspired by <his-name & contact info>. I went on to design & sell 15 different “occupation” character bookmark patterns (i.e. nurse, beautition, construction, etc.), included his info as requested. Many years later, his grandaughter contacted me and thanked me for carrying on her pawpaw’s craft. I cherish my new found young sewer. She never did catch the hook & yarn fever, but many of her designs were inspired by her grandpa’s crochet ones, only in fabric!!
As others have said it’s just your own take on the original pattern. I’ve wondered about the same thing for some time now. It’s hard when there’s so many of the same thing out there. But don’t let it discourage you
Oh my gosh, that’s such a sweet story… And such a great example of the impact we crafters have on each other when it comes to publishing and selling designs! Thank you so much for sharing!
