Each granny square represents one week. Each round within the granny square represents one day. So each square is seven rounds with an additional round for a border equaling 8 total rounds. The squares were then crocheted together at the end using a single crochet joining stitch. There was an odd number in my arrangement and I made those two corners plain black squares.
