I love big chunky yarn! It tends to pucker like that when you start with 6. I like to get around it by just making my magic ring with 12 stitches and counting it as rows 1&2.

Yes! I almost exclusively use chunky yarn, and the 12 is the way to go.

Me too! Especially for the big parts. Smaller parts like ears. muzzles, and arms and legs seem to do ok with starting with 6.

The heart body is made with 12 in MR and nose and ears are made with 6in MR.
