Hey everyone so I have a small problem, I got my first custom order. I don’t have a cow pattern but she wants me to make her a cow.
I showed her different pictures of cows and patterns I could buy. Here is the problem. She picked a pattern she liked but wants me to make my own pattern and not buy a pattern.
Is it ok to make my own pattern based off of a style of another?
There are an unlimited number of cow patterns. I come across plenty between here, Etsy, youtube, etc and some are very similar as far as style/aesthetic. I do believe it’s okay to make something your own but still having inspiration… That’s like an artist painting a live person… It’s not copying or stealing a pattern just by using something else as inspo. You’re amazing! I feel like it’s only stealing if you’re copying a pattern, step by step… Love youuuuuuuu
Is there a specific reason why they don’t want you to buy the pattern? If you want you can always go on YouTube and search cow pattern tutorials there since they’re free and won’t be bought if that helps.
Personally I find it okay to make your own pattern based off another’s pattern, there’s so many patterns like bee’s, jellyfish, bears, etc that look the same but are written by a designer differently. Of course you can always say you got inspired from [Pattern name] by [Pattern designer] if you plan to share the pattern but if that bothers you still you don’t have to share the pattern, it can just be for personal use
If you look around Ribblr whether in the testing zone or pattern shop you’ll see many get inspiration from others as well. You can always get inspiration from the cow but mention to the buyer that you’ll have to make some changes and add your own things to make it your own unique pattern if that helps you a bit as well
She knows that I design patterns and that’s what made her want to buy a few plushies from me. When I told her I didn’t have a cow pattern she wants me to make a cow pattern
Honestly ive seen so many cow patterns here on ribblr, youtube , different websites. You can use them as inspiration to create your own cow pattern or i would just use one of the patterns you find and make her a cow. Shes not gonna know if its your pattern or someone else ? Right , because she asked for the plushie not the pattern. You can always add small details to it, like maybe a purse or something. Technically youre still creating the plushie itself! So she should give you credit to that, its still time and dedication to finish the piece. As long as you dont call the pattern “yours” then youre good to go!
I see, in that case she probably also likes your style so you should be fine to make it your own, you can always just make your own cow pattern without using the cow pattern she picked as inspiration and mention this is your own cow pattern and see if she’ll also like that as well
If you’re unsure you could use yarn that you have a lot of to make it, show it and say you can make something like this in the yarn she wants whether that be chunky, blanket, etc if that makes sense
I think I will create a cow pattern. Only because where I live everyone has cows, chickens, horses and llamas. I was more concerned because I haven’t seen any patterns like the one she picked. I will say in the introduction part that I took inspiration for (blank)
Yep, I think that’s one of the rules on Ribblr actually. I remember seeing somewhere that you can take inspiration as long as you credit the designer
I literally am listening to an ep of Pardon My Stash podcast called “Pattern and Design Ethics” as I’m typing this crazyyyy… but yes, I have seen “inspired by so and so” on a few patterns now. It doesn’t necessarily mean you copied some of the pattern, but you liked the design and tried to make your own version of it. I think you’re okay
