What size crochet hook do you guys use for Bernat Blanket yarn? I always used 8mm because that’s what it says on the label but I found out a lot of people use 5.5 mm
With amigurumi you should subtract 2mm from the recommended size on the label, most people use a 5-6.5 for it.
I use either 5.5 or 6 mm
I use 5 mm!
Yeah, for amigurumi you should find a hook that is the same thickness as the yarn
i use a 5mm
I use 5mm
It really depends on the type of project. As others have stated, when I’m using it for a plush/amigurumi, generally I will use anywhere from a 5 - 7mm hook depending how full the fluff a particular blanket yarn is (I swear some Bernat colors are fluffier than others ), but 6.5 is usually my go to so I can avoid pain in my hand/wrist.
Sorry got a bit longwinded here
However, when using blanket yarn for wearables or home goods I might use a size even larger than that recommend by the label if the pattern/design dictates it, for example to facilitate drape or make an airier piece. I think the recommended hook size on yarn labels is often intended moreso for wearables and home good applications than amigurumi, so they aren’t always a good metric for that genre of makes.
Individual tension also can play a role in hook size and related to that, a person may use a hook size smaller (or larger) if they’re trying to better match the gauge of a project, so it mostly matters what the person is trying to achieve with the resulting fabric and knowing how to accommodate for their own style of stitching, if that makes sense? With amigurumi we generally want to keep the stitches tighter and denser (more compact) to maintain the shape/structure of the piece and help hide stuffing, so often people use a smaller hook to make achieving that result a tad bit easier.
Me personally, I’m almost always using a smaller hook than recommended by designers/yarn labels because my tension gets pretty darn loose the longer I work on a project.
I usually use a 4.5mm .
Usually 5 mm hook to 9mm hook
5-6mm
