please say that im not the only person who is doing this, when the yarn calls for a 5.5 mm hook, what do you use.
I USE A 2mm HOOK, I LIKE MY STITCHES TIGHT

I USE A 2mm HOOK, I LIKE MY STITCHES TIGHT
i normally ignore the hook size for amigurumi and use a 3
Typically I just go down a hook size with what I have available, I know I went too small if the hook has trouble getting the yarn and splits it
i either use a 8mm or a 5mm
i use like a 4
It all depends on what I am making, wearables need to be gauged appropriately.
I dont even look at the hook recommendation, i just pick which one feels right lol.
The yarn brand i use has problems with quality control so the sizes are off anyways. Even if i buy the same size and color, one yarn ends up thicker than the other.
So i end up using a thicker hook for the thin yarn, and thinner hook for the thick yarn, so that they end up looking about the same.
What @GretchenHulett said. For wearables, I don’t mess with the recommended hook size unless I’m willing to calculate gauge. For anything that’s going to be stuffed, I generally size down. To make heavy blanket patterns suitable for warmer weather, I size up. In the end, it’s your project - do what you like!
I do a lot of amigurumi and I do the same thing, those stitches gotta be TIGHT!!!
I normally use a 4-5mm hook, it really depends though because of how big or small I want it to be
I use a C, 2.75 mm for amigurumi. RHSS usually says 5.5 mm. I started it to meet gauge, but I like it now.
I never look at the recommended size, sometimes there’s even none. I use a 2,5mm or a 3mm hook with light yarn, and a 3,5mm hook for more chunky yarn. I never use bigger than that, I like my stitches to be tight too, so it looks neat. In most patterns, I use a smaller hook than said in the material list.
I’m guessing you mean for amigurumi…
Since I don’t make amigurumi, I usually use close to the recommended hook size or close to what the pattern suggests, depending on my guage swatch…
I use a slightly smaller hook so my stitches look better
You know… I was just thinking this may partially be a generational thing as well
‘In the boomer times’ it wasn’t unusual to own articles that required hand washing and hand-made stuffies were often used more as decore than something which could be loved on.
The lacey, loose look you get with larger hook sizes just seems too fragile and ‘messy’ for the modern aesthetic.
I usually pick my hook size based on the yarn im using rather than based on what yarn im using bc i rarely use the recommended yarn
3.5 or 4
i like to use 5-5.5mm preferably with chunky yarn!
