I am retired. When we sold our business / building, I invested in some amazing year end clearance sales and stocked up. I call it my retirement account. I do sell some now, but I mostly make things for my grandkids.

You could shop for a lot when there’s clearance or holiday sales or something when it’s all discounted. My yarn is a gift from my friends for the birthday, I don’t need a lot of last a long time (I’ve only used like 5 skeins in 5 months)

Hobby Lobby has their annual clearance sale around June usually, and skeins are super marked down. They, as well as Michaels, often have skeins of yarn in their clearance sections. It’s hit or miss, but if you can find some they’re usually really marked down. I just recently got a bunch of large skeins of acrylic for $1 each.

You can sometimes find really good deals of destashing and/or estate sale stuff on Facebook marketplace as well. Just don’t pay before pickup with those, to be sure they’re legit.

Edit: Also, depending on where you live and what your situation is in the neighborhood sense, consider setting up a table outside randomly and maybe you’ll get some interested passer-bys.

I just got a ton of their “Feels like Bliss”, normally $8.99/skein, for $3 each. Was awesome!

I wait until my craft store has a 40% off sale which is quite often so I don’t usually pay full price.
I also find yarn at the thrift store - a couple of weeks ago I bought 5 skeins of faux fur yarn for $2.50AU - .50c each
You could ask family or friends who usually buy you Birthday or Christmas presents etc to get you gift cards to your yarn supply store instead, then wait until the sales are on and stock up on the yarn you like.
You could sell your makes online - via etsy, ebay, Craigs List or other online sites.
If you were to join a knit/crochet group you might find some fellow knitters/crocheters who have some yarn they don’t really like or want anymore. They maybe happy to offer it to you cheaply, for free or possibly trade.
