Hey everyone !!
I would like to know how do you guys choose the price of your pattern ?
For now i just posted one free pattern but maybe in the futur i will post paid pattern. How do you come with the price idea?
Don’t you feel like it’s too cheap or too pricey? I struggle a bit with the impostor syndrome i think lol
It depends on how long you worked on it
Each person had their own method, I price my patterns like this (from an amigurumi standpoint):
Start with picking a minimum price that you would sell any pattern at, make sure to account for any fees that get taken. For me that price $3.00 USD, and I will get at least $0.60 taken away for fees.
Then I increase the price, generally by intervals of $0.50, based on:
- size
- complexity, such as whether its no/low sew, has lots of color changes, has any special techniques that take a bit to explain, etc.
- uniqueness, like how hard would it be to replicate
If I feel like a pattern I make wouldn’t be worth $3, I just make if free. I also try to keep my patterns on the cheaper/affordable side and always ask myself would I be willing to pay that price, and if not I lower it.
Of course you can always look around and see what other people are charging for patterns similar in size, complexity, style, etc. And base your price on the current market.
Thank you so much, it’s really helpful !! I will think about that, and keep what you said in mind !
Imposter syndrome is so reallll, idk how this is a really helpful question for me lol!!
I choose mostly according to the time it took me. I also look at other similar items to see the average price. I think of the price I would pay for which type of pattern, I’m more likely to pay more if it’s a unique pattern. And about the impostor syndrome (i think many of us feel it, especially in the beginning ^^), remember that writing a pattern takes time, and the time and effort you put into it are valuable, and same thing for the skills you have learned to be able to make it.
Honestly ik this isn’t really helpful but my “method” is really just the complexity of the pattern, or is it a unique pattern or are there ones just like it, and honestly I just ask myself what will people pay for this pattern. Ik it’s kinda random and not specific but
Thank you !! It’s true that impostor syndrome is a big issue for me, like for now i’ve posted one free pattern and it took me like a year to publish it because i was thinking that not many people will like it
Oh no, that’s extreme I get it, but don’t worry so much lol, it’s only a crochet pattern, and people have different taste, there will always be some who like it and some who don’t. I see patterns i don’t like every day and i just pass them like everyone, it doesn’t matter. Even if there was only one person who makes it, then we would have made one person happy, so hey it’s worth it ^^
I essentially break it down by complexity:
Beginner - $2-$5
Intermediate - $6-$8
Advanced - $9-$13
I give myself a lot of wiggle room with those ranges though. Some patterns are listed as Intermediate because they have one or two intermediate steps, but otherwise they’re suitable for beginners. In that case, I use the Beginner range.
I also keep in mind how unique the pattern is. If a free version of whatever I’m designing is readily available I’ll either offer it for free or, if I feel my design is sufficiently superior, in the Beginner price range.
Last thing - offering part of a pattern for free can help drive paid pattern sales. For example, offering a bear pattern for free and then selling clothing and accessory patterns designed to fit the bear. Offering free simplified versions can help sell more intricate versions as well.
