Is your pattern really yours??

JorjaandHerGecko’s
Hi! I have a bookmark pattern exactly the same and was wondering if you copied?
Has just messaged me with this message

I wont report you but if you did you’ll have to take it down.
**ok ive just received this message and **as ive just had my very first e pattern tested and published which ive now unpublished because
Now hear me out. I had my pattern written the way i wrote it and then you get testers to test it. Well i made some changes added 2 youtube videos to explain stitches ( now deleted( and once ive checked it had some testers advice and then wallah a person messages me saying they’ve got the exact pattern did i copy it?? Now hows that possible,???¿¿
1: They have the same testers that i used,
2: they had the same feedback from the testers i used???
And .
Wat ive done is deleted the video’s from YouTube as i had a link feom my tester to say basically this is helpful etc so now im wandering why i was so excited in writing which i created my pattern on the 3/11/2022 And thought since i can no longer crochet as of Tendinitis ( Tennis Elbow), a severely torn rotator cuff tendon and Bursitis in my rightarm/elbow i thought maybe i cod as i cant crochet and i love my crocheting and im a crochet pattern tester ill do something that takes away the awful way im feeling but NO I FEEL WORSE AS SOMEONE THINKS IVE STOLEN THERE PATTERN NOW IM THINKING OF Deleting it altogether. Ive been crocheting since i was 6 yyears old im now 56 years old , a nana, seventh day Adventist Christian so why would I steal someone’s

pattern so now im not going to change my pattern. Im going to leave it in draft for now. My 3 testers were great and it was an awesome feeling that they coud help me test my pattern. I suffer from Raynalds Disease, Rymatoid Arthritis and only in the last 2 years been able to use my hands again & crocheting after not having proper use of my hands for 10 years and now i can not crochet for a while??¿¿ why would i steal someone’s patterns?? Im sorry for this post i never thought as I’ve been crocheting without patterns since maybe 14 years old and i really feel horrible. Im sorry but this has put me off writing anymore because as soon as i do someone says its been stolen

not possible as thet cant have the exact words i write,?,?

I’m sure more than one person can come up with the same idea, That’s one reason I have mine published on my website because it’s dated. Another way is to put your written pattern in an envelope with information as to when you created the pattern that you have notarized before putting it in the envelope and mail it to yourself (put the name of the pattern on the bottom of the back of the envelope so you know what pattern it is.). Do not open it unless you need to go to court to prove it is your pattern. file that unopened letter someplace safe. The earliest pattern created would have creators rights.

Wow, i don’t have a website and as I wrote & said in my post i can’t crochet as of unable crocheting and not resting etc and taking breaks i now have see a specialist, thats hard enough and having to deal with this ( I honestly believe this is a person been nasty). So i done a few crochet patterns but didn’t think it would be so hard to do on e format as im use to pen and paper which i can’t write now have to try using my left hand. Its put me right off from doing this again. Sorry if im bleating but it’s really hit my heart and i dont believe someone could accuse me ,??, i have my own intro, words like exactly I’m really believing i should just never do this again on Ribblr like it meant so much to me and even though its a small thing its turned out to be bigger and triggered my ptsd so im just going to stay away from putting any patterns for testing.

I would respond to them and tell them the date you created your pattern, you said it was in 2011 right?

No put a 1 instead of a 2 can’t write with right hand i made it up on 3/11/2011 amd i have myinfo, my story why i created this bookmark.

Ill take your advice if thats ok

then just give them the date that you created it and that you did not copy their design. that’s about all you can do.

Put it back up. Do you know how many bee patterns, whale patterns, octopus patterns, etc. are out there? This is a very basic pattern (if you’re talking about the bookmark). There’s no reason to be worried about this. It’s not as if it’s some sort intricate pattern that you would’ve had to copy in order to publish. Ugh, this makes me so irked.

the bookmark pattern? it is a very basic pattern to begin with so I don’t see why they’re making it such a big deal. it’s like when the finebros wanted to copyright the word “react”. Republish it girlie! I had fun testing it for you and I’m sad to hear that you can’t crochet much anymore ;-;

EXACTLY, the whale patterns is a perfect example too.

I completely agree with everyone else here, you 100% should republish your bookmark. Genuinely so many people have the same patterns for things out there, so I honestly wouldn’t worry too much :heart:

I think you should be proud of your work and put it back up.

You know the mittens you tested for me? When I drafted the pattern, I thought they were the only ones in the world using that exact sideways construction technique. When I first had the idea, I even searched, just to check, and found nothing. So I went ahead with them.
Then I got a little stuck, and asked for help in a designers group, and showed my work, and whatdoyaknow, another designer there had already written a pattern for mits with the same idea, and hers were even in the same colour!!! But she didn’t get cross, she gave me the help I needed, and wished me luck. Because that happens. Great minds think alike :grinning:

I think ripping off designers is disgusting. I don’t support it at all. But crochet has been around for a few hundred years, and there are millions of patterns already written. So ideas come up more than once. When you copyright, it’s the words and pictures. Not the shape of the object. It’s not ok to copy someone else’s work. It’s not OK to look at someone’s pattern and reverse engineer it, and sell it as your own, even if you did all the words, pictures and stitch counts yourself. That’s still lousy, but happens a lot, sadly.
But that’s not what you did. You had your own idea, and someone else had the same idea, and that happens.

I think @TheFairythorn said it best, and what I was thinking… Crochet has been around for far too long to not have the same idea somewhere… Think about the granny square concept, do you think any one of the hundreds that have published it somewhere online was the original creator? No, but it’s their take on the idea… A simple bookmark, which if I saw correctly was exactly what yours was, is bound to be written down multiple times. That doesn’t mean you need to take yours down. It may mean that you won’t make a lot of sales, but that’s a different situation.
I have made several patterns and later found that there is something similar, it doesn’t discredit the work I put into it… As long as it’s not exactly the same and I know I put in the actual brain power, I keep it, even if theirs was first :woman_shrugging:t3:

Did you say you both had the same testers? Ask the testers if they tested for the other pattern? If not, report it to @Ribblr.

I for sure havent tested any other. Helga76 is the first pattern I ever tested too. so I can’t be of much help ;-;

That other person is harassing you really.
Just don’t respond to them and do your thing.

Now me, I’d have a few choice words for that person. As well as a few neck chops.
