Kind of random pattern questions?

Okay, something crazy I’ve noticed out of every pattern I release the most basic, not nearly as intricate ones sell the best. Which is kind of unfortunate seeing I’m about to release 2 blatantly unhinged patterns :joy: I truthfully expected the dino and chicken to do better than the peep did…Im actually shocked at how well the peas in a pod are doing so far…In comparison to lets say the Dino (which hasn’t even sold) or Chicken which are both a bit more unique…

So if you’re a pattern writer, or buyer…Do you have similar experience? If you prefer simpler pattern PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I want to release patterns you wanna see! (You can comment what patterns you want to see!)

i would say i’m at an intermediate level of crochet right now and i’m starting to get into patterns such as the ones you’re about i release. i think this app is 75% beginners at the moment, and they look for the more basic patterns. When i purchase a pattern i’m going to purchase something that’s unique and detailed, cause why buy, for example, an octopus pattern when it’s so simple? and there’s so many similar ones for free. I think your patterns are great, because those beginners will eventually become not beginners and not be scared to get ones like those.

Yeah, I sell mostly my smaller, easier designs. I think maybe there are a lot of beginners/younger makers on this app and they are into simpler designs!

As a buyer, here’s my blunt opinion:

  • For the dino one, the concept is really cute but maybe the picture isn’t doing it justice!
  • For something like the chicken, I would consider it a simple pattern, but chickens have been really popular so buyers have lots of options
  • peeps are really popular around easter, and frogs or peas in a pod are always popular patterns, so they’ll usually always do better regardless, especially when they’re free patterns.

Don’t let it get to you, sometimes it takes a bit of time building an audience. Keep up the good work! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Then there is me, I’ve crocheted almost 50 years, knit over 25 years and the simple patterns don’t interest me at all. I prefer pullovers with texture. I prefer complexity. Amigurumi or however you spell it doesn’t really interest me at all.

I’m in the same boat as @tygger428… The majority of the patterns on here are simple and repetitive and not something I would be interested in.

This is what I’ve been thinking, as a designer I like a lot of the more funky patterns, but I can see, had I followed patterns as a beginner I would have been much more enticed to a peas in a pod than a giant dino. I forget that just because I see something as ā€œjust a ballā€ a lot of people see it as more complex than that and prefer guidance.

Also something to consider: a lot of those people won’t reach intermediate level cause they don’t have the same investment into crocheting. It might be just a fun thing to do once in a while, or just very occasional, or just someone wanting to make a gift for a friend and never picking up a hook again. Those people will buy one simple pattern more easily than a complex pattern.

I can see how a garment crocheter would see amigurumi as brutally basic.

I personally am the opposite, I dont like garments, perhaps it due to my lack of attention span, I’ve always found the repetitons of amigurumi calming, which is always a win when you have anxiety

Haha! I’ve been saying that about the dino since I released him! I can’t tell you HOW MANY pictures I’ve taken and something always is off. So I just leave it at that for now! I love reading everyones pov, because personally I’m shocked at how opposite its turning out compared to my original assumptions!

A squirell would be cute! I personally am more of a chipmunk person, but the concept generally is one I quite like! Ill keep this in mind :eyes:

It is that i havent seen them be popular and so you dont have much competition with free patterns

Personally i love all crochet i like texture, details, and i dont find amigurumi basic however it depends on the design. I do like to challenge myself. Ive been crocheting for over 9 yrs and my grandma would just be in awe at the way crochet is now :woman_shrugging:t3:.
So it could be that its basic and with that in mind a specific purchaser would be pulled to it.
I wonder if you maybe added a more complex design that may help set the tone for more traffic.
I have noticed that people like to add quick makes to their markets and your chick and dino would do that.
Crochet is kinda funny in a way either its a hit or not. maybe even a collaboration or doing a series like designing a base with different add ons to make it look different.

I don’t mind basic patterns at all, and I get their purpose aswell, but also idk I’d think after a while people would get a smidgen bored of the brutally basic amigurumi. And by that I dont intend to say amigurumi is basic, it most certainly is not! However, there are a FEW things, usually the quick makes you mentioned that I do find especially simplistic!

I love the collab/series idea aswell! I’d probably lean more towards a series of critters due to my lack of communication skills though :joy:

Some will stick with the simple ones because they don’t trust their own abilities. It takes a bit of bravery to step outside of your comfort zone.

To me it’s yarn. I can rip and restart if needed without beating myself up

Unless it’s some sparkly or mohair  then it’s annoying
