I made some for myself which I think is best because you can mold it to size that feels most comfortable for your hand.

That’s does sound like a good idea for a crafty person like me! 
I was mostly wondering about whether to use clay that turned out hard or kindof spongy, since the handle would be large (if that even makes sense?)

Well, I used FIMO professional. But there’s also soft. The professional is not soft, but not unpleasant to touch. Not going to break just because I dropped it. Using a sledgehammer, not so sure.

Thanks, I’ll look into that one! I know spongy handles can make crocheting more comfortable, but since normal handles are hard I’m sure making them pretty wouldn’t necessarily make things harder!
