Sooo I just learned the basics to crocheting (different stitches and stuff) like 3-4 days ago and I need some advice on where to properly start. My cousin has been crocheting for about a few months now and she’s been teaching me a lot of things but I’m still learning. Should I start trying to actually make things? Or should I just keep practicing the different stitches and things for a bit? (Btw I’m on vacation rn so I can’t buy anything but I have some teal string and a 5.5mm hook.)
I would start making something. But like something easy and very simple to start with.
Try starting out with something like a granny square or a cat beanie! They’re both great practice with chaining and double crochets
Good luck haha!
The next thing you know all your money will be spent on yarn
I would make an easy project that use stitches you know and if you don’t like it frog it. (I would keep it tho for memories.
I wouldn’t recommend granny squares because a friend did that and the granny square was like “make 99 more to turn to a blanket” then she made another 3 but never got around to completing it cause she got sick of it.
Try with a small project like plush animals particularly low or no sew is best!
Plushies are more complex than a granny square, and most of them don’t need to be turned into a project or a blanket. You can just make one and be done. Or make it a dishcloth if you use cotton yarn. Plushies aren’t necessarily beginner, they’re more advanced beginner or intermediate levels.
I do recommend trying a granny square, or making a dishcloth. Both are pretty easy! When I started learning I did practice stitches over and over again until I got them done and started making rags and dishcloths. Plushies are more complex so I don’t recommend starting there because of the magic circle and magic ring. They’re are many YouTube videos on granny squares and dishcloths for beginners. Good luck!
It’s better to practice your stitches a lot before making a project, but if you want to make something, then I recommend starting off with a scarf or coaster.
You could try making a coaster. It’s simple, doesn’t take a lot of yarn, and you can use it when once it’s finished.
I’ve been teaching my brother to crochet and after teaching him basic stitches, I found a YouTube video to make a cute little sphere because it was the simplest amigurumi project I could find. It was a bit of a challenge for him, but if you have the basics down and you want something harder I would recommend making a bee or a whale, as they have slightly more complex patterns. I hope this helps!
If you don’t want to do amigurumi, granny squares, coasters, scarves, and tapestries are great practice!
Wash clothes are a great one to start out with! Just make a certain number of chains for how long you want to make it, and then make the same amount of rows total for the amount of chains you did! (The set of chains does not count as a row) they are super helpful for being in the kitchen, or are great gifts for family and friends!
Thanks for all the advice I’m going back home from vacation today so I’ll definitely be trying some of the suggestions. Just have to remember to take it slow and practice.
Hi TT, I love this question. Keep practicing basic stitches while making something usable that does not require a pattern. Scarves are a rectangle. Wrist warmers/fingerless gloves are two squares (rectangles if you’re precise) sewed into a tube with space for thumbs. Check thrift stores and Dollar Tree for inexpensive yarn.
