New to designing crochet patterns

Can I sample a pattern but make new changes to it? Would it be copyrighting, or would it be considered my pattern?

It depends what do you mean by sampling a pattern but make new changes? If it’s for a basic shape like a sphere that’s something ever pattern will probably have

I agree, it depends how much you changed it. For example, if you used an octopus pattern and just changed how many tentacles it had, that’s not enough to make it your pattern. If you took inspiration from other people’s patterns though that is okay, everyone does that to some extent.

I meant like if I used half of the original pattern to use as the starting of my pattern

If this is for personal use and not sharing that’s fine, but this would not be allowed to post online free or paid as you’re directly stealing from a pattern. Depending on what it is you can technically share it but no pattern is written or shared for example if it’s a doll base pattern from someone else and you add hair, clothes etc in the pattern/intro you would share that link to the pattern and show how you added the things to it if that makes sense

Unless you have explicit permission from the designer of the pattern to share and modify I wouldn’t do so
