I’m wanting to make a granny square with this kind of butterfly in the middle. I couldn’t find a pattern I liked for what I want to do with them so I will need to make my own.
My question is how would I add this in? I’ve never done a granny square before.
Short stitches on the high spots, long stitches on the low parts.
I could tell you more, but then it
would be my pattern. 
I would suggest researching other granny squares till you understand the construction.
I would try a granny square first. Maybe one with something else in the center like this, but different. This is one example.
