Hi @ribblr and everyone
I was thinking it might be cool to have a trade option for patterns.
An opt-in feature where you tick a box to say you would be open to trading a pattern for a pattern instead of paying for it, and obviously once a trade is requested it can be declined by the other party if they don’t want one of the requester’s patterns etc.
The trades would be at both party’s discretion and not matching price for price, as that could just raise everyone’s prices and brings into question how people price their patterns.
Something to think about, what do you think?
Omg that’s such a fun idea, I hope Ribblr takes it!
To me enabling trading opens a door to potential pattern thieves. I don’t like the idea. If I were a designer I d fight it. I would fully understand if @Ribblr says NO WAY
i agree! A trading feature would not end well! It could go wrong in many ways!
That’s fair. It didn’t really occur to me that people would abuse it. Thats a shame
Ribblr would have to be able to track what really belongs in which library, extra work they shouldn’t have to do
Plus what if a member didn’t like the pattern they received in a trade? Not sure Ribblr would want to mediate all those kind of disputes.
Designers would not like their intellectual property moving around from user to user either I don’t think
yeah it’s a really good idea but there are bad people unfortunately
Yeah, I see what you mean. I did only mean designer to designer trading the patterns, not anyone who had bought patterns could trade them, but I see why it could be a problem.
Yeah, if it were just designers themselves trading their own patterns (which is already doable by gifting etc.) it would be one thing, but I’m not sure I want my paid patterns to circulate among people freely. Especially since some people would have been able to memorize it before sending it along etc. And we all know there’s this growing problem in the community of people straight up copying patterns and ideas and claiming them as their own, well it just becomes much harder to keep track of that if someone traded the pattern away
For a designer to trade their own pattern with another designer would be certainly less worrying. As long as there is a feature where you can see the pattern you’re getting sent before accepting the trade.
But yeah, again, I wouldn’t trust it unless I know the person very well. I’ve been burnt by people I thought I was doing honest trades with in the past and it’s really made me question people’s intentions
That’s a real shame people are out there doing that.
I definitely agree I wouldn’t want my paid patterns to circulate freely either! Or anyone’s. I hope it doesn’t seem like I do!
No you’re good, I was just thinking about the concept
People could easily screenshot each pattern that they received and then post it wherever they wanted to. Anywhere on the internet. A recipe for disaster as far as retaining intellectual property rights to your own work
And as to the idea of only designers being able to trade patterns, I can see the non designer members getting bent out of shape that only designers can do this.
Thanks for sharing!
Patterns are owned by a single account and cannot be transferred. Designers can of course choose to gift their patterns to whoever they choose to but please know this is irreversible.
Thanks, I clearly didn’t think it through
Thanks for clarifying Ribblr’s position on this. This topic has come up before recently and wasn’t really resolved in that prior thread
I think we should be able to trade patterns!
Like you can only trade paid patterns for paid patterns
And free patterns for free patterns
I just thought this would be cool
This was already recently a suggestion!
I don’t think ribblr will implement it, because it has a lot of risks and could cause more problems with pattern theft
A lot of people have posted this suggestion. Of course there are the pros and cons. We’ll start with the pros, you can trade your own unique patterns made by you with other unique patterns made by someone else. It would be a really great feature, there is the gift pattern option. They can only be patterns made by you. Some cons are it does make it so more patterns can result in theft and people claiming them as their own pattetns. That would really suck. It just really depends.
Like @LittleCreatures said, there are many pros and cons. But there is an important con, some people that can’t have a stripe account might be jealous. I’m not sure if we should add this maybe or maybe not.
