Ribblr of the Week - Meet Jessica 🏅

Say hello to Jessica (@cubiecrochet)- our new Ribblr of the Week and the designer behind Cubie Crochet :confetti_ball:

Tell us a little about yourself
Hi! My name is Jessica, but you probably know me from social media as Cubie Crochet! I am 25 and I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. I have a degree in Computer Engineering with a minor in Computer Science. Obviously I am a crocheter, but I also love other crafts such as cross stitching. When I’m not crafting, I’m probably playing a video game such as Minecraft or Stardew Valley.

When did you start crafting and how?
I’ve been into crafts for as long as I can remember! My mom taught me to sew and cross stitch at a young age, and as a kid I was also big into drawing and making jewelry. I first learned how to crochet in middle school (~2011), where I was part of a Leisure Arts Club after school a few times a week. My first project was a very wonky scarf that definitely wasn’t a rectangle like it was supposed to be lol.

And how did you start designing?
I started designing my own crochet patterns in 2020. My first designs were scarves, where I tried to incorporate a variety of stitches to make interesting textures. This was before I got into posting much on social media and before I got into amigurumi. Most of my patterns now are for small no-sew plushies because I love a quick project!

Do you have a favorite craft type and if so - why?
Crochet is definitely my favorite! I love the ability to pick up yarn and a hook and make something adorable so quickly! I mostly make crochet plushies nowadays because I love working with the soft chenille yarn.

What has been the most memorable project you worked on?
My most memorable project has to be my hexagon blanket. I originally started this project in 2018 as a “scrap yarn” project, but as this was my first blanket I had no idea how much yarn it actually needed and ended up having to buy more lol. I had put it away in my closet for a long time before picking it up again in 2021, where I spent about a month finishing it, sharing every step of the way on TikTok. This project helped me gain a lot of my TikTok audience, giving me the confidence to continue posting and sharing my crochet projects.

What are you currently working on? Be honest - how many WIP do you have right now?
I always have a few wips that I’ve put away in the closet to not touch for months or years lol. Right now I have at least a granny square blanket, a scrap yarn sweater, and another sweater project all packed away. Most of what I make nowadays are plushies, and those are always small enough that I finish most of them in one sitting. So I actually don’t have any plushie wips! But I am currently working on a tapestry crochet project that I may end up writing a pattern for.

Which of your makes/designs are you most proud of?
It’s hard to pick but I would have to say my no-sew rat patterns! I designed my first rat pattern in 2023, and just last month I designed a baby version to go with it! I love how these plushies are super quick to make, no-sew, and they look fairly realistic. I love seeing people use my rat patterns to make plushies that look like their pet rats.

What is your usual process of designing?
When I get an idea for a design, I like to sketch it out first on my iPad. I try to think of what variations this pattern could have - such as the dutch bunny coloring in my bunny pattern. Then I start to make one, writing down every row as I do it. It often involves a lot of frogging and redoing rows to get the shaping right. Once I’m happy with it, I type up my notes in a word document.

What inspires you to create/design?
Most of my recent designs are small, no-sew crochet animal plushies. I am obviously inspired by cute animals, but I am also inspired by my intended audience. I try to keep my designs small and quick-to-make for crocheters who sell at markets. I sell at markets myself, and I definitely prefer patterns that I can make in about 30 mins or less to help keep my inventory well-stocked.

What is your favorite feature on Ribblr?
I love on Ribblr that it’s so easy to keep track of where you are in a pattern by crossing off the row when you finish!

Where can others find you?
I’m on Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Threads, BlueSky, and I just started on YouTube! @ cubiecrochet on all platforms. All of my links are here: cubiecrochet.carrd.co

Would you like to shout anyone out on Ribblr?
