Say hello to Kara @KHookCreations the designer behind K Hook Creations, and our ROTW!
Hi! Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m Kara and I have been crocheting for 12 years. I live in Arizona with my husband, two daughters, and a dog and cat. I like to be outside - walking, hiking, and playing disc golf are some of my other favorite hobbies.
When did you start crafting and how?
I’ve been crafty ever since I can remember. I started a blog back when
I graduated college of all my DIY craft projects. I was really into
Pinterest and found lots of project ideas there and was even really
into scrap booking. But then I learned crochet and I never went back
to anything else.
And how did you start designing?
I started free-handing Pokemon! I wasn’t really aware of patterns back
then and so I just came up with my own designs while referencing
photos of Pokemon. It was really good practice for learning how to
make different shapes and what was possible with yarn. Once I did find
and start using others’ patterns, I became really interested in
sharing my own and creating my own style.
Do you have a favorite craft type and if so - why?
Crocheting amigurumi is my go-to but I’ve also been trying to knit and
I love doing cross stitch from time to time. Crafts that are
repetitive and mindless help keep me calm.
What was the longest project you worked on?
My 151 Pokebean project - it took me 18 months to finish! I crocheted
all 151 gen one Pokemon in little amigurumi bean form. It was quite
the undertaking and I never take for granted the support I had during
that time to finish it.
That’s amazing! And the shortest one? (excluding frogging!)
19 mins and 3 seconds is how fast I crocheted a Pokeball once!
We love that it is timed to the second!
So, what are you currently working on? Be honest - how many WIPs do you have right now?
I’ve currently got a special dragon ami I’m making with indie yarn, a
stitch-a-long blanket, a cardigan, another blanket, and several other
small amis. Really my WIPs are usually under 10, I don’t like having
unfinished stuff haha
What is your usual process of designing?
I sketch out a quick drawing and list the pieces I’ll need to make.
Then I just start crocheting and write the rounds/rows as I go. I’ll
usually note what sections will need photos so I can take those when I
do a second try and those usually end up in the finished pattern.
What inspires you to create/design?
Animals give me lots of ideas to start with or sometimes I just look
at my yarn stash and think of something that would look cute in that
Pop culture time! Any favorite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?
The Labyrinth is my all-time favorite movie! I don’t have much to
recommend in terms of new stuff; I have 2 young kids so I don’t get
out to see movies or watch anything other than Frozen (yes, that’s
still a big hit with the littles) or my 25th rewatch of The Office
What is your favorite feature on Ribblr?
The interactive patterns! I love that I can track my progress and pick
up right where I left off between my PC or phone.
We must agree progress tracking is awesome!
And finally - pay it forward - your shoutout to a fellow Ribblr
Stitch by Fay (@stitchbyfay) is a friend of mine who is an incredible designer. Her
pieces are always so unique, perfectly stitched and photographed, and
her patterns are so easy to follow!
Thanks so much for sharing!
