Ribblr of the Week - Meet Sadie! 💜

Say hello to Sadie @coschetbysadie - our new Ribblr of the Week and community member behind Coschetbysadie! :confetti_ball:

Tell us a little about yourself:

Hi everyone! I’m Sadie (she/they), a college student studying music composition who’s been knitting for 13 years and crocheting for 6. I am a cosplayer, Twitch streamer, and all-around nerd, and I couldn’t be prouder of it.

When did you start crafting and how?

I’ve been knitting for a long time. In middle school, I got really into the cosplay community on TikTok (it was 2020 and I was in middle school, what else was I going to do?). I bought cosplays, but I always wanted to make my own. I just never wanted to learn to sew, so I never thought I could. Four years ago, I realized that I already make my own clothing through fiber arts, and that cosplay craftsmanship contests were not only possible for me but that I already had the skills to win them. Four years later, I’m an award-winning cosplayer, and I’ve only just gotten started.

What was the most memorable project you worked on?:

As of late, most people would probably say the giant Rocky I crocheted from Project Hail Mary. He is cooler than me and I acknowledge that. However, I think what I’m known for in cosplay circles is still my crochet Frieren cosplay. I made significant alternations to multiple patterns, crocheted a giant magic staff, and built a yarn wig from scratch for that cosplay. She was my first real entry into the world of crochet cosplay.

What are you currently working on? Be honest - how many WIP do you have right now?

Right now, I’m cramming for my first ever crochet market. By the time you read this, it’ll have happened already! After that, I’m knitting a baby sweater for my new little cousin. After all that, I can finally get back to my newest competition cosplay build, Sora from Kingdom Hearts II, which is entirely self-patterned and freehanded. He’s about halfway done, and I’m so excited to keep you updated on my progress!

Which of your makes/designs are you most proud of?

I did a crochet Attack on Titan uniform four years ago. The day before the con, I spent every waking moment freehanding the obnoxiously complicated leg harnesses, and that day, I proved to myself that I can do this. If I hadn’t done that, I don’t think Frieren would ever have happened.

What inspires you to create/design?:

Nerd stuff. It’s always nerd stuff. I’ve reached a point where I cannot watch a show anymore without overanalyzing the character designs and trying to figure out if I could crochet them. I’ve developed a very good eye for how fabric sits and what fiber content and stitch type I could use to replicate it.

Any favorite song, book or movie you would like to recommend?:

Anything you see me cosplaying is worth your time. My taste is very impacted by characters that I can headcanon as aroace (like me!), which is why I cosplay Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End) and Dr. Grace (Project Hail Mary), but I’m also working on Sora from Kingdom Hearts 2 and I’m scheming and plotting a Qifrey cosplay from Witch Hat Atelier.

What is your favorite feature on Ribblr?:

By far, my favorite Ribblr feature is the people. The fiber artists on the community boards are so welcoming and supportive, and the staff do an incredible job of interacting with everyone. It really speaks to the nature of the fiber arts community at large, but also to the community on Ribblr in particular, that I have never had an experience on this app that hasn’t brightened my day.

Take over our feed! Which 3 - 5 designers/patterns on Ribblr are your favorite?

Massive shout-out to The Survey Cloak by The Grumpy Granny, which was the first crochet cosplay I ever made and also served as a base for my Frieren cloak. I’ve been making a ton of the Wildflower Bandana by Nastja Crochets for my upcoming market. Lastly, if you want to try crochet cosplay with something a bit more straightforward than a full-on build, I highly recommend the Mabel sweater collections by Autumn Olive Crochet!!
