Ribblr Yarn Photoshoot Day!

Hey Ribblrs!

Today I am taking you behind scenes. Literally

We are working closely with Sian, an amazing photographer who is helping us bring Ribblr Yarn photos to life. :camera_with_flash:

As an artist myself (beyond crochet/knit/sew I also write songs, perform, and I’m a videographer) I feel proud to support other makers. fellow humans that create beautiful things in this world.

Which is why it’s been unfortunate seeing so many companies (even in the yarn space!) cutting corners and using generative AI instead of real photography.

It reminds me of an interview a CEO of an AI-music app did in which he said: “who has the time to learn how to play an instrument?”
It felt so dismissive. I started playing music when I was a kid. And I haven’t stopped since. I’m still learning!

So this is a reminder to myself and all of us -
It’s more than okay to take days, weeks, months and even years to study, and learn, and grow. This is what makes us human.

Real photography is important because I want to take the time to capture the colors and textures as honestly as we can.

QUICK QUESTION (please reply below :folded_hands:)
When you’re buying yarn online, what do you wish photos showed you more clearly?

The true color? The texture? How thick it is? What it looks like once worked up?

I really want to make sure we continue to improve even after launch, so we can create the absolute best experience for all of us.

I truly hope Ribblr Yarn becomes a big success so we can continue to support more real makers.

Thank you all so much for your support :purple_heart:

Yours,
Lir

First!

I think that it’s important to see what colour it really is and weight and how thick it is and also what is the recommended hook. But it’s really nice to see how it looks when worked up
(I bought yarn online only one time so idk)

Ooh good luck lir!!:pink_heart::two_hearts: And I didn’t know your a musician too!?:pink_heart:

I think it should be compulsory for them to show the true color and texture of the yarn. There are so many different yarns online that look completely different in reality!

Yes omg nowadays I see so much AI being used and I don’t like it :sob::sob::sob: photography is one of my hobbies so yes I totally agree with you :heart_hands::heart_hands::heart_hands: to your question, I have never bought yarns online cause I would prefer to see and feel the yarn myself but if I did, I would mainly want to see the texture, colour, and how thick it is !! :sparkles::sparkles::sparkles::yarn:

ahhh it looks amazinggg i’m so excited to get my own ribblr yarn soon! One thing I always wished they showed more clearly would be the thickness, texture, the true colour and what a completed project would look like using it!

App of the above!! If it’s a straight colour then the texture and the true colour! But if it’s verigated then we need a colour swatch, I find most places don’t do crocheted colour swatches so maybe a knit and a crochet colour swatch!!!

Mm I would love it if they had pics of a finished result, how it feels, but again THE FJNISHED RESULTTT in both Amigrumi and wearables:)

I like a close up picture of the yarn to see it’s texture and how it’s been constructed, such as whether its a spun yarn or more like a woven rope etc.

I often find, one of the things that is missing, is an image of the back of the yarn band that tells you the recommended needle/hook size, the composition of the yarn (ie: 100% cotton or 50% cotton, 50% acrylic etc),the washing and drying instructions, where it’s made and the gauge swatch details etc.

Another thing I often want to know and see is, how the variegated yarns and self-striping yarns look when worked up. How frequently and abruptly does the colour change occur. This isn’t as important to me if the colour is solid.

The true color, texture/how it’s constructed, and how thick it is compared to an everyday object to show some perspective. It’s annoying that some companies are using AI to photo shoot their products, because honestly AI doesn’t even get close to what the real yarn is. Thank you for caring so much!

This is so refreshing to see, real product pictures instead of AI:purple_heart:

To me a size comparision would be nice, like someone holding a skein in a hand, so I know how much yarn I get. That’s my most common disappointment, that I thought it would be more yarn

The texture for sure! I also prefer seeing examples of work especially if it’s a variegated yarn. Even if it’s just a swatch it’s helpful to see the colors and how it will work up on a project. A list of uses this yarn would be great for blankets and scarves, etc. That way people who might not read the description of acrylic or cotton will know what it’s recommended to be used for. Sometimes yarn size can appear smaller than the actual rating, an example I noticed is big twist has super bulky but the yarn itself looks more between a worsted and bulky yarn in my opinion. I think it would be helpful for a picture of a strand and then providing a description of this yarn is super bulky but appears thinner than most.

Thank you!!!

Yes, the actual color (buying online is tricky when you can’t feel & see it first), but also closeup of the strand to get a feel for thickness and smoothness and potential splitting. A gauge square might be nice, to see how it interacts when stitched, too.

and for the record… if singers tried to have concerts backed by ai-“instruments” it likely wouldn’t go well… who wants to pay concert prices for karaoke? Goodness.
