Ribbuild Material info can't be more than one word for first "size".

So I’ve been importing a pattern I have bought from etsy into my personal collection. Since this set of patterns is 5 character themed bunnies I wanted to import them as variations since many parts are similar. I got stuck already on the colors.

I saw they supported variations so I was excited to turn colors on and off as needed but I didn’t see that option so my plan was to put information on what the yarn was under ā€œMaterial Infoā€ and type ā€œNoneā€ where it wasn’t used… Well that didn’t quite work. If the first variation is more than one word then the only thing that is changed is the last word. The replacements can be more than one word but not the first one?

I’ve looked through the support articles for the ā€œsizesā€ section but honestly it leaves much to be desired. ā€œsupported formatsā€ are mentioned but barely shown/explained. I’ve tried putting the first section of words in quotation marks but it ignores those. Parenthesis just breaks variations and adding hyphens are also ignored on top of looking awful. I’m at a loss for how to get it to use the entire phrase. I’d also like to be able to tell specific materials to be ignored for specific ā€œsizesā€

Hopefully this is a bug or I’m missing something? I really want to use the sizes system in making my own patterns but things like this feel limiting in how it functions.

maybe the sizes system is only small, medium, large, etc? this could be more so for clothing sizes

this system is fairly new to ribblr, so there’s some things they gotta work out still, good luck tho! if no one else responds to this post, i’d suggest tagging ribblr

It’s been around for at least the last year or so. Been available for the entire time that I’ve been here that I remember and I’m almost at my 1 year on the site.

They’ve stated before that it’s intended for sizes but can also be used for other variations. Even using it for sizes, only pulling the last word could still cause issues for example if you wanted to tell an amount for the size you would say perhaps ā€œ1 skeinā€ well in the current state it would only grab ā€œskeinā€.

I love the concept of the feature which is why I’d love to see it improved upon. Having it more visual would certainly help which I already suggested in another post but small issues like this are potentially a quick fix that will make it more functional so I’m just reporting quirks as I find them with hopes that it bothers enough people to be fixed. :winking_face_with_tongue:

Hey! :waving_hand:
All you need to do is first define sizes or variations in the introduction part of the pattern. For example:

Var1 (var2, var3, var4)

Then in every part of the pattern, including the materials follow the same style. Eg: 1 skein (2 skeins, 3 skeins, 4 skeins)

Hope that clarifies it! Here if you need more help!

As I said, I’ve already defined them but it’s only changing the last word of the first color variation.

Perhaps pictures will help more. You can see that it only takes ā€œpearlā€ but the last variation it would show the entire line of text. This was easier to see everything when doing it on the computer but it’s still frustrating that I can’t define it to take things before that word no matter what I do. Also turning it off for some variations like I can the instructions would be so much better.

Got you now - yes. That wouldn’t work for your case, because it’s built for sizes the first one outside the bracket currently must be one word like M or XXL or 16" for example.

I’ll log your feedback!

It wasn’t on just the sizes part though. This is under material info as well. I did keep the sizes one word so they would work to even test further. Wouldn’t be terrible to implement something as a container for multiple words such as quotations or brackets.

Thank you for listening to my feedback. Don’t want to sound like I’m nit picking but this feature has so much potential!

Not at all - we totally get it! It’s been logged

edit: as a workaround, you can try using dash like variable-one

I did try that as well which is why I mentioned that hyphens don’t fix it either. You can see in the image that I typed Seed-Pearl and it still only grabs the Pearl at the end. Only alternative I can think of is just smashing it all into one word with capitals at the start of each word but that’s not preferable.
