There are tests you do to detect the fiber contents of mystery yarn, I’ll try to find the link, but if the fiber is unknown it’s best to go with the most careful method first

HELP MY YARN is full of MILK

To wash your yarn First you will need to make sure it’s in a hank, then secured with tiny pieces of yarn or zip ties (look up how to hank yarn for washing) Carefully lower the hank into warm water with a few drops of dish soap or woolite or shampoo and let it fully saturate Gently swish back and forth a couple of times, form a circle with your thumb and finger and draw the whole hank through this circle to wring out excess water (repeat 4 or 5 times) then repeat the entire process twice more …
