Does anyone else have ADHD that tells you to start a project and then decides halfway through that it wants to make something else and won’t let you physically touch that project again? What do you do to finish? Why does it want to do everything and nothing at the same time? I need a nap.

I’m currently working on a triceratops, two different granny hex cardigans, a unicorn and a fox. I was also attempting a Star Wars graphghan as a Christmas gift but I think I’d rather chop my hands and give those as a gift instead.

I’m also supposed to be making an elephant and a Mosasaur too but apparently, I’m not allowed to work on those either.

I watch yt or listen to podcasts and sometimes work on my other projects take a break and go back to the project after an hour or so. Trust me I have sooooo many WIPS

although I haven’t applied this to crocheting just yet, my biggest thing I learned to do was select which one and set a timer for 5 mins, just to get SOME progress done. and sometimes you’ll find that you don’t care about the timer and just keep going  but looking at it as just 5 mins a day feels a lot better than telling yourself to commit to the entire project

I have a Kindle with a remote and a stand so I read while I crochet but maybe an audiobook instead or classical music in the background? I could try that.

I’m going out of town tomorrow. Maybe I’ll utilize the car ride while my husband drives.

Oooh I relate to that so hard…

I usually just leave the project alone for however long it needs to be left alone, then I can decide whether or not I really want to finish it. I have ideas for things I want to make all the time, I’ll get halfway through, and then lose motivation or have a new idea. If the spark comes back later, I finish the project. If it doesn’t, I don’t.

A lot of the time, the motivation comes back a few days later when I see it laying around unfinished and I’m reminded of the idea I had, or I might have a fresh idea for how to make it work better. Sometimes the project just needs a week to be left alone.

I don’t have ADHD (at least not diagnosed, but I don’t think I do) but that is so insanely relatable
I’ve been procrastinating so badly on embroidering something I started like seven months ago :')) It’s the last step before I finish but I physically cannot force myself to do it
I also have numerous other things hogging my yarn and it’s mildly annoying when I can’t find the other end of the skein LOL

Motivation is just weird I guess? Like I feel absolutely unstoppable when I do get motivated. Sometimes I do find that “multitasking” (in quotes because it’s apparently not physically possible) helps me get through things - crocheting while watching a show, or even in class (surprisingly, my teachers are fine with it). It all comes down to figuring out what gets to to act I suppose :0 Trying to draw during the summer was particularly bad, I had music (with lyrics!! Very scandalous) playing behind an audiobook while drawing :'))

Yeah, I find that doing other things while crocheting helps.
Crocheting during class is really good for me, it honestly helps me pay MORE attention to what the teacher is saying. If there isn’t an assignment to work on, and the teacher is just talking about the subject, crocheting helps the information stick, and it gets some crochet done.
I don’t ever crochet at home without YouTube in the background. It really helps me get more crochet done, it does take me longer to crochet, but I can keep going for longer periods of time.
This is surprisingly good advice, it doesn’t seem like it should be something that helps, but it really does.

I don’t even want to talk about embroidery…
I started a T-Rex and haven’t finished it. I don’t even know where it went at this point.

THIS!!! If it wasn’t for crochet, I probably would’ve fallen asleep in my calculus class even more LOL

I’m soooooo bad about leaving things half done too. What I do is when I feel like I need to do something else I say out loud what I need to do. Like if I am working on something with a deadline like a tester pattern or a birthday present something that I really need to finish I will say something like “I’m going to finish this pattern THEN I will do whatever I feel like doing”
And reminding my self out loud that I will get to do what I want after as basically a reward helps me.

I’m two skeins into one of my granny hex cardigans. At this point, it feels like I need to finish it or I’ll have wasted so much time and yarn.

Yeah, that is a tricky position. If you’re not feeling motivated, you can try working on a small project, like a small amigurumi, or, if you prefer crocheting clothing/accessories, a pair of fingerless gloves. Getting a project finished can really help you get motivated. If you come back in a couple of days after finishing a couple of small projects, it might help you feel motivated to crochet again.

I fell asleep crocheting today and now my three year old is screaming at me because I won’t share my coffee with him. No wonder I can’t get anything done. Toddlers, man.
