Stitch uses

Hello I was wondering if someone could tell me the purpose of each stitch? Like how hdc makes it taller or a bobble stitch makes a bump in the design. I hope that makes sense, I’ve scoured YouTube and couldn’t find anything I was looking for.

I would be happy to help! Do you mind explaining what you need help with a little more?

So when I look at patterns some use different stitches. Why use a HDC and not a sc

It could be for two reasons. One would be to make something slighter taller than you could with an sc. The other would be the fact that an hdc has three loops at the top to work into, instead of two, like an sc or dc.
Let me know if that last bit doesn’t make sense, and I’ll try to link an article.

Thanks that was helpful can you explain why you’d use the other stitches?

Well a hdc and a dc make your project bigger faster essentially a dc is 2scs in one stich whereas a sc is the smaller of the two but is neater

Bigger in what way flat or rounded? Idk if that makes sense

Well depends on the project but usually flat and taller

HDC is also denser bc you yarn over first!

Could be for size, texture, detail, or just preference. I personally love the look of DC a lot more than hdc, but sometimes I find hdc to be better for some projects. Sc is mainly used for amigurumi since the stitches are tighter and smaller, that way the stuffing doesn’t poke through. And there are some things that use different stitches for amigurumi like this adorable pattern by @Scarletskies:

I tested it and it’s great BTW!

Anyway, I also like to use DC when I want to make something bigger faster. And there are different variations of slp st, sc, hdc, and DC that make up different stitches like the waffle stitch, crunch stitch, block stitch, and SO many others.
I love the waffle BTW I have a tutorial in my shop if you’re looking to learn more stitches.

For the bobbles stitch, this is most commonly used to arms and legs in amigurumi, so that you don’t have to sew them on later. This is in more than 50% of small amigurumi patterns, it makes them easier, faster, and great for last-minute market prepping. Also pickles are very popular, and the bumps are made of bobble stitches.

I hope at least some of that made sense and was at least a little helpful
