I sat down taking in everything. Everything I had heard, everything I had seen, but it just didn’t make sense.

‘Why was I here?’

‘What did I do to deserve this?’

Then I heard a rustling. I looked towards the sound and I could make out the small swoosh of the mangrove leaves. I could have sworn I saw something black move through those gnarled trunks. The rustling came from behind me. I could hear it, feel it, getting closer. It started sploshing its way through the water and I was scared to look. Then it stopped. I looked over to the dog, who was looking defiantly to whatever was making that sound.

Finally, I summoned up the courage to look. And what I saw was horrifying. I saw a bloodied animal skull with two jutting teeth staring at me. It had four curling horns and its body was cloaked in tattered black robes. It opened its mouth in anticipation for its dinner. And I knew immediately I had to run.

I turned and sprinted towards the trees for my life.

“NO!! Don’t run!” I heard the dog say, yet I ignored him.

Ao Yin was right behind me instantly leaving no respect for the plant life behind him. I could hear him gaining, growing closer, but I dared not look back in fear of losing ground. I saw a little depression in the ground in the roots of a tree and I sprinted with all I had left in hopes of hiding from the monster. Then I found out I made the wrong decision.

I should have known Ao Yin knew this place better than me. He knew exactly where I was going and stood right in front of me with his two teeth inches from my face. I could hear his rapid breathing and saw blood in his mouth. His breath was hot against my face. He opened his mouth more and I knew I was about to die.

But then I didn’t…

I heard growling and I saw the German Shepherd leap out of the bushes and attack Ao Yin. He was caught by surprise and collapsed. But he wasn’t defeated yet. He attacked the dog by drawing out his long gaunt hoof and swiping at him. It drew blood… This enraged my new friend and fought back even harder. A great fight ensued. They were equally matched and both seriously injured the other but neither gave in. I have to say, it was the greatest fight in literary fiction!

“Run!!” the dog yelled.

I came to my senses quickly and ran as far as I could, which wasn’t far at all. My legs were burnt out. I collapsed and blacked out.
