Hi, again I am having problems with my pattern testing. At the moment I have at least half of my testers finished, the due date was at the least two weeks ago. There are some testers who haven’t finished and have not reached out to me at all, the last response I have responded to was a week ago and I have not heard back from anyone since. I have also asked them if they could update me on their progress, just so I could figure out how much more time they will need. However, I have still heard nothing back. I do understand that things come up and that it is okay to wait for replies (especially during holidays and such), but I feel like this is a bit excessive and honestly don’t know what to do about it. I have heard other stories similar, but I am not sure how to resolve it. I don’t want to seem rude or impatient in anyway, but I just don’t know what is going on.
Do I just post the pattern on my shop as I have had a few testers complete, or do I keep waiting?
I greatly appreciate anyone who has any advice
Maybe send a dm or tag them and if they don’t responseafter 2 day block them cause they are ghosting you
You gave them a due date and they failed to reach it. They didn’t even inform you that they were unable to finish the testing. Block them from testing and release the pattern since it has been tested. It’s not rude cause you already tried to communicate with them and they ignored you.
If the due date was 2 weeks ago, you should give them a warning saying that if they don’t respond in 2 days you’ll just block them. If they go 2 weeks and no response, they’re not going to make a good tester in the future no matter what
Send them a dm. Say something like ‘I’d you don’t respond in the next 24 hours you’ll be blocked’ cause two weeks is a looong time overdue
I’ll be honest, you aren’t the rude one… you sent a message and it went unanswered, its time to cut your losses and reduce your stress. I would just remove them from testing (block them if that’s what you want to do) and release your pattern.
In the future, on your testing call I would very explicitly state whether you are willing to give extensions and how many days you are willing to extend past the due date. And most importantly, be firm with yourself about these dates and rules you set up, don’t let anyone take advantage of your kindness.
And just to give a little of my own input and experiences: I personally don’t give extensions anymore, I did with my first 10ish pattern, but honestly it was almost never worth it. What made me stop was one incredibly rude tester that badgered me constantly to get an extension being they didn’t finish my requirements by the due date, and I vowed to myself to never allow extensions again after that. Sometimes designers can get taken advantage of with extensions, and its rarely ever worth it.
And just to add, testers are doing us designers a huge favor by testing our patterns, but they also applied knowing the due date and any other requirements you have. The respect should go both ways.
I agree with what everyone is saying here, you won’t be the “bad guy” here if you choose to just remove and block them from testing for you again. Everyone here understands if something comes up and if they need to stop testing/need more time. But letting the designer know something came up (whether they choose to share their personal info of why is up to them) is the bare minimum! That way designers know if they need to add more testers or not before the scheduled release date
This is for future tester calls that can hopefully prevent this from happening again. When you post tester calls in the requirements you can add that they must respond within x days of the tester group message and/or start a journal (just materials could work) or else they will be removed from the test. You can also add whether you’re flexible with the due date/if you can give extension’s if needed. I think also adding that testers must be able to communicate and respond when they have time is good and that ghosting will result in you removing them from the test and potentially blocked from testing future patterns from you.
Also since you had some testers finish already it should be fine to publish it, you can always post tester calls for patterns that are already published or if the tester call for said pattern is closed already you can post another tester call now if you’d like more testers (If said tester call is still open you can just leave a comment in there saying you’re still looking for more testers)
If you’d like before you remove them you can send them a personal message (maybe also in the chat?) that’s not in the tester group message saying since you have not received any response from them for 2 weeks they have x days to respond to this or else be removed from the test and/or potentially blocked from all future tests from you
You aren’t rude you gave plenty of time and even contacted them, I hope this doesn’t happen to you again
I agree with what Scarlet said. Honestly more people have finished my patterns without any extensions, rather than ones people did have them.
It’s a bit odd that some people just ghost you, and never reply back.
If you give them time to respond to your message, and they fail, just remove them.
Maybe start adding in your tester calls “NO GHOSTING” so it’s fair, and they don’t have anything against you when you remove them.
honestly it’s not that bad, because they can always get the pattern later when you release it. So I don’t see that much harm in removing a tester, due to no communication.
You’re not the rude one!!
I would post the pattern and block the testers. I’ve had similar problems in the past and if they were responding then I don’t block them. If they never responded to any message and the due date has passed they get blocked and the pattern posted.
