hi! i’m in a church production, i have about 12-14 lines, and next week we’re doing it without scripts!
problem is, i’m having so much trouble memorizing my lines
if anyone have any tips or tricks that’d be amazing, its my first time actually doing a speaking role in anything, and within that i’ll be guiding a group of like 40+ people through the woods while acting, so the pressure is real man-
thanks in advance!! <33
Coming from a theatre kid, these are my tips on how I memorize lines!
I HIGHLY reccomend practicing with a friend/sibling! I always practice my lines with my sister (I read my role, she reads everyone else) and this is the method that works for me!
Also, I would reccomend linking your lines with a certain movement if that makes sense?? Ex: you say the line “------” when you are reading a book on stage (this was the first thing that came to mind lol)
ALSO, repetition is really good!! This doesnt work for everyone tho :). Say all your lines and repeat them ALOT!!
hope this helps x
tysm sophia!!! i don’t have nay friends to do them with () but i’ll do the rest of these!!!
np! <3 lmk if u ever need theatre tips :3
I always repeat the sentence to myself till I’ve memorized it then move to the next sentence etc.
you could record yourself reading it then listen to that
sorry if that doesn’t work I don’t do plays
i don’t know why, but i recite it in the shower and i’ll remember it for a long time
Type your lines without looking at your script and then compare
Maybe hide your lines in your costume; what I did for a class play[, I was a tester guy]
But if you have dress, maybe just sing your lines in the shower and ur good
I used to do theature and I was always the one who memorized their lines really fast, so here are some tips I have:
- Recite with family or friends, have them look at it while you say it. If you get something wrong, they need to interrupt you and correct you!
- Write the most important ones or ones you are struggling with the most all over your house. I have a chalkboard that my sisters write Bible verses on that they are trying to memorize, at every meal we see it and they recite it to my parents. (they are in Awana at my church) You could print papers, use a chalkboard or dry erase board or whatever you have.
- If possible, turn it into a song. Songs are always easy to memorize. Just make sure you don’t sing it in the play unless it’s a musical.
- Record yourself and listen to it, or speak with yourself.
- In my most recent play I had a long part as Emily Dickenson. I wrote down the part I kept forgetting on my hand (they changed the script a month before the play so I didn’t have time
) At that point I actually looked at my hand, nobody noticed though
This may not be the best if people will see your hand though, I was just sitting in a chair.
- This may seem silly, but I can’t look at people when I recite stuff. I had to look off in the sky. This of course doesn’t always work though, but since I was reciting mostly poetry it was perfect, because it looked like I was thinking it up on the spot as Emily Dickenson
Hope those ideas help, they may not work depending on your part and type of play.
Turn it into a song! Thant’s what I always do anyways
LOL that helps so much
I’m in theatre, so I do have a few tips
- repetition
Repeating the line over and over (say 10 times while reading it) then looking ahead and saying it as many times as you can can really help. You can do this multiple times if you would like.
- Listening
Record yourself saying the lines from the script. Then put it on loop and just listen to it a billion times.
- Idk what to call it
When memorizing songs, I like to just say the first line, and listen to it while saying it. So if you record yourself saying it then say it with the recording that may help.
- Combining
If you have a certain move or physical gesture that you do while saying the line, just relate the movement to the words.
- Help
If you have a sibling or a friend that can help you memorize, ask them for help! They may give you a new pov on the line or memory stuff
I have used all of these and I can promise you that at least one will work. I have memorized entire songs with these tactics. So I hope this helps
Writing down your lines helps memorize them, also pracitice
lots and lots of practice!!
you got this <:
