Hello I’m an Advanced crochetor used to working with yarn sizes 2-4. I have a stress plushie coming in the mail soon so I’m trying to get the yarn I need for his CLOTHES together. Im planning on using velvet chenille yarn for it’s sheen and softness. However I have very little experience with such yarn , so if anyone has any tips or things to watch for it’d be much appreciated.

HIIII, advanced beginner here!! I love working with velvet yarn, however, it can be very frustrating if you don’t know how to use it.
My first tip for amigurumi is to chain two to start, no matter if it asked for magic circle or magic ring. You might be a bit confused why, but velvet yarn is chunkier and covers up the hole more, and this method still lets you pull the hole closed even more if gentle.
So chain two, and on the chain below, single crochet whatever number of stitches the magic circle or ring asks into the same bottom stitch. I’ll try and find a video if you confused.
Secondly, WORK A BIT LOOSE!! don’t do what I did and have really tight tension, not only does it make the project and stitches clearly look tight, it makes it SO hard to put your hook in the stitches!! It drives me insane!!
I feel as if other then that keep working with the yarn as normal, just don’t tug or picktoo much or the fluff on the velvet will fall off!!

Ive yet to use velvet chenille yarn but i have used chenille quite a lot! I recommend if your amigurmi spheres come out sort of pointed, skip the first round and starg with the second.
For exampel if the pattern is:
R1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
R2: 6 inc (12)
R3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18)
You would skip the first round and single crochet 12 into the magic ring!

I do something similar. If you have the same 3 you put plus the 4th round that will give you 24sts, I start with 8sc in MR. Then incx8 [16], then (sc, inc)x8 [24]. Then I continue the pattern as written.
I use velvet yarn all the time and this is the only thing I do differently. If you get quality yarn, you can do a MR easily (I use Mainstays Velvet mostly).
