I am curious, when you are looking for a pattern to actually purchase, what makes you Not buy it?
Price?
Difficulty?
Recrochetability?
PDF or No PDF?
I am wondering why you would decide not to pay for a pattern. I will add my own answers below
I don’t buy patterns for a few resons:
- No PDF - I need things to be in PDF so I can take it with me. I hate using celluar data to access the pattern when I’m on the road, on the bus, out for lunch, etc.
- Price - Anything over a few USD is too much for me. I am Canadian and the exchange rates suck.
- Recrochetability - if it’s a pattern that I can remake several times and NOT be burned out on, that’s perfect. Without that, I feel like I am wasting my money.
- Difficulty - I love the look of so many patterns, but they look challenging and maybe I’m not nearly at that level.
- Photos - I want to see more than one clear photo, so I know what it looks like from all sides.
- Quality - if the end result doesn’t look like good quality (and this varries person to person, I’m not being judgemental about it), then I don’t want to spend real money on it.
- My Opinion of the Pattern Creator - if I find their tester calls, posts, etc snooty or snarky, or too pushy with religion or personal ideals, then I won’t buy the pattern. I want to support people that I’d gladly donate an organ to, not someone who seems like I’d leave them behind in a zombie apocalypse
All joking aside, people who seem like I’d ignore in IRL, I won’t buy patterns from.
- Uniqueness - is it a pattern that everyone and their dog has already made? I won’t pay for it. Simple as that. If I can find 100 free and comparable quality patterns out there, I’m not going to spend money on it (I’m on disability, and have very limited income, and live in a place where the cost of living has forced me to live in a horrible place for over a decade, I won’t spend extra money on a copy of the same pattern I can find for free in 13 different places without putting in any serious effort to seek).
Again, my answers are not meant to be rude or mean in any sense. Just the reasons why I won’t, or can’t, buy a pattern.
Ok, now your turn! Tell me what makes you say No to purchasing a pattern

Usually if I can design/freehand it myself

Ok but you can’t send PDFs through Ribblr right? So wouldn’t that mean no pattern on Ribblr you would buy? I’m just curious cause I haven’t seen where we could include PDFs at all (to add I opened a ravelry shop because I know people prefer PDFs so my patterns are on there in PDF form so people can get them there if they prefer)
Also I would not buy a pattern that doesn’t have a good quality picture or that it’s one that’s out there a million times for free. I’ve seen people trying to charge for octopus, loaf cat, etc patterns when there’s so many for free.

I agree with all of those, they’re super reasonable! I’m not allowed to buy patterns so that’s why I don’t but even if I could those are all reasons I would say no!

for me, its if i can find almost the exact same pattern for free or cheaper. if the person making the pattern annoys/bugs me, i dont want to support their business as much because they’re not my favorite person in the world. i don’t really mind if its a pdf or not, but thats just my opinion

For me it’s a lot of the same. Price is a big factor, and also the quality of the design. (I also won’t buy from some shops due to the designers opinions/actions). Also I would never buy a paid pattern of anything really basic like a bee, octopus, etc.

Many of the same reasons mentioned here.
I’m on low limited income.
If it’s free and a very repeated item, I pass on pay.
I carefully wait to be able to buy patterns, and I always need to wait for sales.
I don’t pay much attention to attitudes and such of people. I’m really here to have a good time with crochet and positive interaction when I see a spot I can jump in. So, that said, I did see on a free pattern once, in the description very angry toned wording about the pattern ownership. I get it that effort goes into these but everyone has a disclaimer section and no others I’ve come across were as rude in wording and tone. That would put me off.
More than one picture is important and pictures that are not blurry.
I’m not sure why there is a pdf feature here when you are not allowed to download it.
If I pay for a pattern, I’d like to have offline access to it. This is one of the main reasons. My internet is spotty and it is frustrating to lose access. I’m too old to see a pattern on my tiny phone. My iPad isn’t ideal either…I wish I could print what I buy.
But there are some incredible designers here and I do support purchases as I’m able.

For me, the first factor is interest. Am i interested in making that? If nah, no use buying a pattern. I didn’t crochet for a long time because I wasn’t into most crochet style patterns, i also don’t like the look of most knit garments. But i realized it is more the style than the craft that I don’t like. I don’t like overly cutsie plushies. And I don’t like baggie looking knitwear. There are also some techniques that i don’t like. But all of that is personal preference.
So let’s say i happen upon a pattern that is just my style, and i really like it. What would the factors be on if I buy it, assuming i have some spare change to spend on it.
A pdf really does not matter for me. There are always ways to get it off of the site if i need it offline.
Difficulty is not a huge issue as long as I think I will have time to do the pattern. Google exists, i am capable of learning new things, and most crochet patterns overestimate how difficult they are anyways. On Ribblr, i feel like i could contact the pattern designer if I really just couldn’t figure the pattern out.
If I suspect the pattern may be stolen, i will not buy it.
Reviews on the pattern also make a difference. If it looks like a lot of people had difficulty with the pattern, it may not be a good pattern.

PDF is preferred but I can live without it
Price, depends on what the item is and how unique it is
A definite NO if the image or character is copyrighted or trademarked or a close enough to be considered that

Personally, I can’t buy patterns but I think all of these make sense. When it comes to pdfs though, you can just take screenshots of the pattern if you are not going to have wifi.

I’ve tried taking screenshots of the patterns, ones I’ve purchased, and I get a pop up telling me not to do it again, or lose access to my account
That’s why I like PDFs, and I have seen a few patterns with PDFs on them (I cannot recall which ones atm), but that’s why I’d suggested I’d prefer the PDF included. Simply because, if the time comes when a website or the internet is not available, I want the PDFs that I’m able to/already have printed, haha.
All of these are good points. I forgot about stolen patterns, and the copyrighted characters. Disney is known for it’s aggressive response to fan-created art, and let’s not forget how awful Nintendo can be. Scary!

If I purchase a poorly written pattern then I personally won’t buy from them again. This is my number one reason. Believe me I’ve purchased a few. Even some free ones have been awful.
I also check reviews if the designer has a lot of negative feedback that are reasonable reasons then I won’t buy.
Price to a degree but it also depends on what the pattern is of. Even better if I can make the item many times that way it pays for itself.
To me it’s more about the design of the pattern and the final product than anything else because I look for things that will sell at markets. So I am extremely mindful of customer requests, and top sellers.
