What's a good starting point?

I’ve been wanting to get into crocheting for a while now. Where would a good start be? My grandma thinks blankets and scarfs. Both are extremely good ideas. But, when starting something new I like to have have a little bit of a challenge. Just a small challenge.

Personally, I recommend making some form of amigurumi, cause you learn all the basics plus it doesn’t take as long as a blanket/scarf so you’re more likely to stay committed to it.

I would suggest a square just to learn to chain and single crochet but you do not need anything big then you should make amigurumi

I did a bunch of “snakes” or “fries” and just swatches of different stitches/yarns, then I did one amigurumi, then jumped right into a cardigan. Just pick something you really like because you’ll be super happy with it in the end, plus it’ll motivate you to keep going!

I, personally, started with a more complicated amigurumi pattern. I would recommend grabbing some weight four acrylic yarn in a relatively light color so you can see your stitches better. I recommend yarn that doesn’t fray as much for the most beginner-friendly experience. (I used T-shirt yarn my very first time, but it’s not for everyone.) Then, I’d say you should pick an easy amigurumi pattern. Loaf cats might be a good idea, let me go find some patterns.

It’s a japanese term, I’m pretty sure, that refers to crocheted plushies!

I personally made this as my first crochet project:

You could also try making something like a washcloth, there are lots of different free patterns of varying skill levels depending on how much of a challenge you’re looking for.

i tried to start with amigurumi and ended up freehanding a bag while i was camping. That led to trying to start more amigurumi to end up with another bag, a placemat and random started projects. Maybe try a one of each and see which is more challenging… for me personally it’s reading patterns… i am now currently writing my own even though i’m still figuring it out. Good luck! can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I was more ambitious when I taught myself to crochet as a kid (10?) LOL. I had found my late maternal grandmother’s thread crochet hooks and was inspired to learn to crochet with them. I still own them

I don’t mean granny squares I just mean like “classic” square

If you like repeatative things then a granny square would be a great way to learn how to crochet in the round!

what do you mean in the round for a granny square? i thought that was in making bags and hats or animals and what not…?

A granny square is made in the round and starts off small but increases every row
