Where to get yarn?

Hello!
I am newer here. I feel like i never have the yarn i need for fun new patterns and testing calls. How do you go about building tour yarn collection, but also not spend a ton of money?

I shop at Joann because I live close to it, but Hobby Lobby is better priced.

heya welcome here  when i started out i got myself a small set of more common colours like white, black, two shades of brown, and i then added to the collection on a project-based basis! like if the tester call/item i wanted to make needed certain colours i would just get those. eventually you should slowly collect enough colours to be pretty much set for any project! i get my yarn from a shop near my house that’s very affordable (non-american brand yarn)

Sign up for emails, rewards, coupons from Joann’s, Michael’s, Hobby Lobby and only buy when you have coupons, points when there is sales. Do you have an Ollies near you ? Sometimes Ollies does yarn buyouts and also has rewards, coupons and I have gone and bought yarn when I have a 10 or 15% off coupon and only paid 2.50 a skein for the same yarn that other places was selling it for 4.99 a skein or higher. There is also Mary Maxim and Herschners, which you can sign up for the emails too for sales and coupons, its best to wait for the free shipping ones for them, because even if you have 20% off the shipping eats every part of the discount, so free shipping is actually better.

I get yarn at Walmart, but i also ordered a set of colors from Amazon. It has these tiny but mighty balls of yarn in a zippered purple case.
What helps is to essentially have 1 skein of each color of the rainbow, in any shade, plus black, white, and brown. When you run out, get a new one. Each time we went shopping (1x every 2-3 weeks) I bought 1 skein.

believe it or not, if you can wait a few weeks… get it off of Temu…I get all my chennelli and velvetine off of there along with milk cotton that comes in various kits.
a 5 pack of chenille or velvet will generally run $15- 25usd. they also have varigated that is even cheaper. I have been able to make almost 5 large stuffies off of one skein of the 5 pack.

It definitely depends on what yarn type you use! If you use chunky or chenille yarn, I recommend parfait chunky. The skeins are only $3.99 on Mary Maxim. For cotton and acrylic I would recommend Joanns or Michaels.

I actually just started growing my collection in October. I started with black, white, red, and orange speckled. I was able to make quite a few amigurumis w that. As time went on I slowly incorporated more colors for other projects.

Are they good quality? Like do they pill and break apart? And how many yards are in the skeins?

They are about 100g each
This is just an example…

The only problem I have with this yarn is just like any other velvet chennile is it will separate…but that’s normal…it usually is at the end of the strand after cutting…if I’m going to do a MR with this yarn, I make a simple knot at the end so it doesn’t fray on me when I close the ring

I’m in the UK and have had some great finds in charity shops - entire stashes that have been donated that I’ve picked up for only a pound or two including some yarns that I’d probably never think to buy otherwise. When my Mum found out I’d taken up crochet she was also v happy to offload part-used balls of yarn she never intended to use again.
If I need a specific colour I often pick up the small 25g balls of ricorumi cotton which are ~£1.50 & perfect for amigurumi.
