You should invest in one of these for separating yarn to make hair. It’s called a rattail teasing comb. The metal handle makes short work of splitting the plys and the uneven teeth can be used either shallow or deep to create more or less separation. It’s what I use to make doll wigs with yarn

Yeah I know about those combs, (as a goth, trust me, I know 
) but right now I don’t have food in my pantry so that’s gonna have to wait

Amazon has some that are cheap. Don’t know about the quality tho.
My mom had like dozens of those combs. She would tease her hair high every day.

You can buy them at Sally’s. The important features are the uneven teeth and metal tail. These may not look it, but they are very different from regular rattail combs, or braiding rattail combs.

Yeah, you need the uneven teeth and metal tail. Those are the magic. A regular rattail comb is only used for wet sets (in cosmetology) and sometimes in foiling , but even then you’d be better off with the metal tail.
But the metal tail teasing version is the best for separating yarn
