Hello everyome o/
My grandma has someone who has asked if i would take an order for a crocheted cat. Problem is the one they want is ai. I’m completely lost on how I’d even get close to recreation of it. I have not yet begun designing patterns so thats out of the question
if anyone has any suggestions i would be so greatful!
Here is the cat in question-

I think your best bet is to explain that since it’s ai is not recreatable and doesn’t have a pattern. Then give them a selection of other patterns to choose from that you can actually make

This is most likely going to be the outcome. Only thing i can think of to acheive the spiral effects is some surface crochet on a similar shaped pattern. I dont know if im willing or talented enough for all of that
It is a cool concept though!

Yeah I think even more experienced crochet designers would struggle making this so don’t feel bad that you couldn’t

I agree with @T1R3dKn1tt3r ! I am doing an AI owl and it looks simple enough but as beginner it’s definately taking some time to plan and get the correct shape and look.
Maybe find a few patterns you are confident you could make and show her those.

Oh yeah, this is on the more whimsical side of the whole ai crochet thing. Would be a massive challenge. Thank you!
Tbh i was partly just interested if anyone did have some takes on it. I love the creativity others have, im a bit lacking even in the best of times.

I’d love to see it when you’ve got it done! I could definitely see an owl being tough to shape up right. Im always impressed whenever people recreate the ai images though, the real thing is always better! Youve got this

have you seen the ai topic here? theres a few of us taking part. Thats what I thought your post was about, someone choosing an image. I have a cat picture saved that I’m hoping to try and recreate after the owl. Good luck with your project, I’d love to see what you end up doing!

Ive seen it! Id join in myself if i was already into designing. Good luck with your cat too! Mine may end up being completely different but i can post it up when im done!
Im planning on dipping my toes into designing by recreating something my grandma freehanded when she was able to crochet. Having the physical item to go by helps immensely and shes given permission to do so.

I think most of the decorations could be sewn on after… so basically crochet a normal orange cat, and then sew on the details like the pompoms and spirals.
But definitely tell her about AI so she doesn’t get her hopes up

To me, it almost looks like a cover sewn to the underlying cat. If I were near talented enough, that’s what I would do. Start with a well stuffed white cat, then in simple terms, make the basic orange and blue costume in sections to attach to the main body. I can only do basic crochet stitches, so I’m not sure how the ridged look could be created. Finally got the little ornaments, just various beads from a craft store.
Good luck, however you end up going!

Some bobble or popcorn stitches could do well for some of the ornamentation! This would be a good solution, take me forever to get it all fit together right though

To me it kind of looks like a cross between granny square animals and crochet mandalas e.g.
The circular designs would probably need to be made separately and then crocheted in or sewn together. The easiest thing for the paws would be to use front post stitches to achieve those lines at the bottom, with a sort of chevron just above. The majority of the design would use double crochet but the head is a bit of a mix with single crochet in the centre. The hardest part would be the face in my opinion, I think it’d require needle sculpting to create the same look.

My first thought was the african flower animals too! Looking at it again, i think your right on the mark with the stitches and face. Thank you for the input! Love how much thought you put into it
The person ordering has gone into a simple design customized to look more like her cat. But maybe one day when im more confident ill have a try at recreating this guy.

It’d definitely be an interesting project to try to make a real version

I think you should just explain that’s not recreatable
