Do you guys make a gauge swatch when you follow patterns because I feel like something’s always wrong with my projects when I don’t do a gauge swatch…

Absolutely! Gauge swatches are a lifesaver. They’re like a little insurance policy for your project.

I always make a gauge swatch before starting a new pattern. It’s a small investment of time that can save you from a lot of frustration later on. Plus, it helps you get a feel for the yarn and stitch pattern before committing to the whole project.

Have you tried blocking your gauge swatch? Sometimes, blocking can make a big difference in the measurements.

Sometimes I have thought it doesn’t matter. But it really does. Very important.

I only make a gauge swatch for clothing or items that require size adjustments. For amigurumi and such, I just wing it and adjust if necessary as I go

Similar to MissDaisies, I tens to forego a swatch for things like amigurumi (which rarely have them anyway), but for garments and accessories I always try to make one, especially when the designer has taken care to add one or emphasizes the importance of making one. Because I’m often using a different yarn than the pattern and also because I know my tension well enough to know I’ll probably have to resize my hook or needles, haha, it saves me a lot of heartache (and hand ache) to just do the swatch.
