Arm/Wrist pain while crocheting

I’ve been crocheting for about 3 years now, and now after about 20 minutes of crocheting I get pain in my arms and wrists. I have used a pillow for arm support and tried to taken breaks but it doesn’t help much. Any ideas to help?

yes I get wrist pain and soreness all the time! I have no idea what to do… I usually just push through, or leave it and come back later, depending on the urgency of the task… open to suggestions!

I kinda have this but like I have to take breaks because I don’t want repetitive stress injuries

I find that it has to do with the way you hold your hook. If you grips to tight and have to much tension it will be sore all day

For me, the best thing that helps is taking small regular breaks (ideally every 30 or 60 minutes). The more you push through and put off taking a break, the longer you have to rest when you finally do. Once I pushed myself so far that I had to avoid crocheting for a week to recover properly. Now I pay attention to my body and if it feels like I’m straining it, then I stop and take a break.

Another thing that could help you is increasing your hook size. A really tight tension causes strain, so going up a size might help to reduce the pressure.

Make sure you are not holding up your arms. They need to be resting on something or in your lap, the lower the easier it is on your shoulders and back. For your wrists, taking breaks is important, there are some physical therapy things that you can do. Some easy ones are rolling putty and squishing it, and really just massaging helps. Also I know the comments already said this, but tension is important.
