Hey there friend, I would definitely add a lining to keep things from falling out the mesh. As for handles, I have used the plastic rings from a 6pack dr.pepper bottles, cut one of the rings in half and attached it. Then just double crochet around the ring and top row of the bag to match in a contrast color. I liked how it looked.

I just ch the length and sc in the back loops of the chain but it obviously might stretch
I too will say thermal stitch is most ideal for this
