One of my first projects was actually a freehanded Afghan. I just started a chain, and started with a basic single crochet stitch, about 10 rows in, I determined that I was actually doing BLO sc instead of going through both loops of the top v. I then switched to regular sc, keeping the BLO at the bottom, and 10 BLO on each side as a built in border. After a while, I switched to hdc, then dc, back to sc, and just kept switching in no particular order or pattern. It was a great way to just practice the basics. And even though it was supposed to be a couch blanket for me, my husband sleeps under it each night.
So while making something as big as a blanket may be daunting, it is really good practice in keeping your tension consistent ,and reinforcing good techniques.

I really like teaching people to make crochet frisbees as an early project, especially if I’m teaching kids. They work up pretty quick and help teach the basics of crocheting in the round, and they’re fun!

When I was a beginner I made granny squares, because you could make anything with them, you could make a lot and make a blanket or something smaller like a bag or small pouch or book cover or just making 1 for a coaster.

If your into amigurumi, I suggest this website with a lot of free patterns, and you should start with the small keychains one. They also have stitch turtorials.

Dish cloths, or blankets These usually have repeats in rows. There’s so many stitches you can learn by making these. Not just basic stitches but ones that create texture and detail to your projects.
