Hii! Basically, I’ve had a sewing machine for years, but have never gotten into it. After spending the last couple weeks watching highly skilled people do thrift flips or completely design an outfit online, I’ve been wanting to actually try using my machine.
Last night I threaded it and experimented on doing a few different stitches on scrap fabric, but I was wondering if there were any tips/online resources that could be beneficial as I’m starting off?

Make sure to measure and use fabric markers they really help me I just started! I made a tote bag for a club project it turned out really good for my first time!
I highly recommend starting out with easy to use fabrics. Such as cotton or flannel. They are not as stretchy and are straight forward to sew. Once you get into knits and silks it becomes a whole different ballgame. The stitch you need is a special stitch for knits and usually it is accompanied by a special foot you need to use at times. If you use a normal stitch on knits your stitch’s end up breaking.
What are you most interested in sewing to start out with? Are you thinking of doing some thrift flips or starting a project from scratch?

So I have a few links for you that can introduce you to the sewing language. Just like with crochet I know there are a ton of terms and phrases that can be difficult to understand without prior knowledge.
The first link I have here is a sewing language glossary. It goes over commonly used terms in sewing for different stitch’s , equipment, types of seams and fabrics.
The second link I have for you is a fabric site that is super handy to have around. It is called Fabric Wholesale Direct. I highly recommend this fabric site. Not only can you buy from them, but their fabric is all quality fabric and it is great when buying in bulk. Unfortunately it can be a bit spendy when doing a small project. The nice thing about this site is it has a glossary to find fabrics for your choice of projects, and videos that show what the fabric is like so you see it before you buy it.
Both of these resources can be great sites to reference any terms or fabrics you might not be familiar with.

I don’t mind at all. I grew up sewing because my mom taught me but I know it has quite the learning curve.
Since you mentioned that you would like to do some thrift flips, the most common fabric you will come across if you are working with clothes will be some type of knit. That fabric is very difficult to work with at first but I do have a few videos that go over how to sew with them, and what types of knits to stay away from. I have these videos below. The first one is a bit easier to understand if you’re just starting out.
This next one is a bit more complex but it does give good advice and is more detailed than the first.
Both these videos are on how to sew with knits when you do not have a serger(they are very expensive but amazing machines to work with).
As for basic stitch’s on your machine it can vary per sewing machine. So I definitely recommend looking up a video for your specific machine’s make and model on how to get started. Most sewing machine manufacturers have a video that gives you a beginning overview of your machine and how to get started.
This is a bit late but I usually look on pinterest for easy projects and then try to figure it out. If you can, it really helps to draw the project out and what you would need to sew and just figure it out! Then it’s much easier to do thrift flips that you want to do if you can at least try to figure out a bit what your supposed to do! I don’ t know if that made sense or helped! Good luck!
