Block/Hide Patterns from Search

I know I’m not the only person here who is becoming increasingly annoyed by the ever growing number of ā€˜duplicated’ and ā€˜undesirable’ patterns on Ribblr. :scream:

There have been multiple posts, and subsequent discussions about the lack of originality and the number of beginner crocheters ā€˜attempting’ to make patterns.

Unfortunately, there has been little change and many continue to make the same thing over and over again, often asking the question, ā€œhey I made this, does anyone want the pattern?ā€ when there are already 50, 100 or more of the exact same thing already here.

I’m finding the number of these ā€˜undesirable’ patterns overwhelming and taking over search results, making it harder to locate the original and quality patterns I’m seeking.

As a way to mitigate this increasingly annoying problem, I’d like to propose we have a ā€˜button’ on each pattern, similar to the heart we press to add a pattern to our Wish List. The button I’m suggesting is a block/hide button. That way, when we come across a pattern in a search that we have no interest in, we can click the block/hide button so we no longer see it in our search results or our feed. This would make it so much easier to search for quality patterns and reduce our ever growing frustration.

With the increasing number of patterns being added to Ribblr daily/weekly, this is one way we can help narrow down the patterns visible to us. It would make our use of Ribblr a more pleasant experience.

Please Ribblr, we need this for our sanity.

Absolutely, it would work for any kind of patterns I don’t want to see!

I would love to see this! Just as we can press the ā€˜x’ in the ā€œFor Youā€ section, I’d love to be able to hide patterns from my search :head_shaking_vertically:

I’d also love a page somewhere (like the archive) where we can go back and unhide them in the future if need be.

Yes it would be convieneint especially when people repost the same pattern muliple times just different colors… You can post I am not telling people what patterns they can and cannot post… (but it really could be all in one??) but to be able to curate what you wanna see pattern wise would be awesome.

On ravelry you can block the specific pattern or all the designers patterns from being seen.

Oh yes please:folded_hands: I also kind of see mostly the same patterns on my explore page and would like to block some I am not interested in. They don’t need to be bad or dublicated, there can be plenty of reasons why I decide against a pattern

Yes it would be really convenient! Although I don’t frown apon making unoriginal patterns, it is quite annoying at the same time to see the same thing when I’m trying to find something unique!

I think maybe some sort of tagging system could be useful along side a block/hide function, like how in the community tab we can filter out certain tags or communities. We kind of have something similar already with the beginner/intermediate/advanced categories and even the keywords, but its too generalized to be used on its own.

I dont want to discourage beginners from making and posting patterns, even ones who dont have a skill level high enough to make a pattern yet. While it can definitely be frustrating to see these patterns when you’re looking for something else, they’re a part of the crocheting journey just as much as anything else.

But if there was a tagging or more detailed category system, we could just filter it with further success.

It would also be nice if it would remember our filters, I get frustrated with the community tab for forgetting them every time I leave it so I just give up using it most of the time.

Thanks for sharing, we’re logging your feedback and will look into finding better solutions to make sure everyone can have a personalised experience suited to them, whilst still giving space for creativity and support for designers.

Exactly! It’s not necessarily the quality of the pattern that would warrant the block, it’s simply personal preference and to reduce redundancy within the search tab.

With the very insufficient search filters we have, it’s incredibly difficult to sift through the patterns here to find what you’re looking for. Being able to remove the ones you know you’re personally not interested in (and likely will never make) would help immensely.

I still see those patterns though, even if I press the x.

Yeah, me too. hoping that can be addressed as well with this suggestion

This sounds like a good idea, the block/hide button

I enjoy this idea!

I despise looking for patterns, and then get distracted because someone put a pattern under a false tag, and then not find my pattern:/

Though, I feel there should be a way to list the blocked/hide patterns in a tab in My Stuff.

Just in case we need to look at those patterns again.

So do I. The same patterns appear over and over again no matter how many times I hit the X.

For me the main problem is the sheer number of low quality patterns being added to Ribblr by beginner crocheters. Patterns that just don’t need to be added to the platform.

I’m not trying to say beginners can’t make patterns, it’s just that you don’t need to put them in your shop. This is just incredibly annoying. This is why I continue to encourage beginner crocheters to keep practicing and honing their skills before they consider making patterns to share in their shop.

I really hope this feature can be added, and also an update for the For You page. It seems like pressing the X only hides the pattern for that session, but as soon as you leave or refresh the page, it comes back. And since the page tends to show the same set of patterns, if you can’t get rid of the ones you aren’t interested in, you’ll never find new patterns that way. The other thing is I keep getting recommended patterns that I’ve already wishlisted/gotten, and it’s really annoying because I’m afraid hitting the X will block similar patterns when I actually really like it and just want it out of the way.

(I know this isn’t really related to the topic, but since multiple people have mentioned it, I wanted to chime in)

If I were Ribblr staff I’d implement a quota below which I wouldn’t promote a pattern on the sides anymore. Like when only a handful of people wishlist or get a pattern but hundrets, thousends block it - I wouldn’t show that to new people, it doesn’t make the app attractive.

It’s a pretty good idea but new designers need recognition and attention too and sometimes they get bigger by starting with simple designs they have seen before. And new designers generally start ā€œlow qualityā€ because they’re new everyone needs to learn somehow.
