calluses from crochet?

okay so I’ve only been crocheting since the beginning of the year but i think im developing a callus from it. ironically, it’s not on my hook holding hand at all, it’s actually where i hold my project. there’s a spot on my middle finger where i hold my project that my hook hits whenever it goes through. when i shake my hands that spot feels pins and needles and the skin on that spot is a bit rougher than the rest of my hand. is this normal, does it happen to others too or am i being to aggressive while crocheting?

It doesn’t happen to me and I have been crocheting for about 8+ years. Sometimes the tips of my thumbs get a little bit messed up because my hook head catches on them if I am holding my hook super close to the top. Luckily that hasn’t happened in a while for me. My hook doesn’t hit my left hand at all when I insert it so that is most likely the problem:yellow_heart:

Hey there!

It’s completely normal to experience some discomfort as you’re learning a new craft. Developing a callus on your non-hook hand is actually quite common, especially in the beginning. Your body is adjusting to the new movements and pressures.

Here are a few tips:

  • Take breaks: Short, frequent breaks can help prevent discomfort.

  • Change your grip: Experiment with different ways of holding your project.

  • Use a crochet hook with a comfortable grip: A good hook can make a big difference.

  • Moisturize: Keeping your hands hydrated can help soothe the area.

  • Consider a finger cot: A small finger cot might protect the sensitive area.

If the pain persists or worsens, it’s always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional

putting lotion on more frequently has helped a bit, i may try a fiber for if it gets more annoying, thanks!

you might be! it hasn’t happenfed to me but one of my friends is complaining of pain… so maybe similar to that you need something to rest your arms on so that you’re not being so aggressive or putting so much strain

i have quite loose tension, and this doesn’t happen to me. maybe see if you can loosen your tension? if that doesn’t work, there’s various products you can find online which help with strain from crochet and knitting which could be something to look into!

i have a bump on my left middle finger from writing, it doesn’t cause me any pain but it does offset my nail slightly! i wonder if there’s any similarities.

I have the same one but i find it comforting because it shows that ive been creating for long enough to get a callous.

Yeah, I have that too on the edge of my middle finger. I also have a dry area where the yarn is on my pointer finger, and on a few spots on my hook hand.

I have one on my left middle finger too! I kinda like it tbh, i havent been crafting anything in a while so its kinda nice to have back. No pain around it. I did recently get a blister on my pointer finger from my insane tension  gotta work on that

I have a strong callus on the middle finger of my off hand - I’ve managed to stab myself crocheting with a 0.4mm hook for micro-crochet multiple times lol

I do the exact same thing

Sometimes if my tension is too tight for a row, when I try to stab through the stitches, i hit my ring finger, so I’ve got a bit of a callus there :sob::skull:
